Hi guys,
I have a nicely restored 70 Charger R/T SE factory sunroof car that's an OE Silver winner. Most recently I've been trying to put some miles on the car and work out some of the bugs. One item I need to address is how the transmission is shifting. It's shifting very quickly and not allowing the engine to get up into the RPM range. It's in drive before you reach 15-20 mph. It's the original 727 trans, linkage and Carter AFB. Nothing fancy here, just original parts. When I had the transmission rebuilt I told the guy to rebuild it to factory specs and just "spruce up" the shifting a tad, that's it. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as the last thing I want to do is burn up the transmission. I only have about 100 miles on it since restored and most of it is to/from the trailer or show. I welcome any feedback or documentation you're willing to share. Thank-you

Were you at the Nationals a few years ago? If so, I saw that car, congratulations on the Silver win!
We dealt with this in my automotive class and had an instructor who used to race Mopar. He adjusted the linkage on my car. I've learned on this forum that if you have a 69 727, it is a FTK transmission, unlike the one in the video in post #2. My guess is that is true of 70 as well. I've been told that if this adjustment is not done properly, it doesn't take long to burn up your transmission. Not sure how much you have driven it, but it happens quick.

I think that from the factory, they shift pretty early, like third gear by 18 mph, depending on the car and gear ratio. Seems like most folks prefer a later shift and adjust accordingly.

I would adjust/extend the rod at the carburetor about 3 turns and drive it. Easy to do and you can dial it in with just a couple tries. I always found it more precise by driving and adjusting vs using the manual.

Yea, that was me. I totally over restored the car and painted the undercarriage so that's why it didn't get GOLD. Thanks for the compliments.

The adjustment is basically the same whether it's a part throttle kickdown or not. The important part is that the proper throttle pressure is applied to the clutches to avoid slipping. Adjust everything to factory specs and it takes all the guesswork out of it.

Just want to mention the difference in case you try PTK and think it's not working.

Is that what they put on the score sheet? OEM is not really my goal because of stuff like that. I like the painted undercarriage and I'm not painting original color, I'm choosing colors I like! Otherwise, I like original all the way.

Yea, the under hood black parts were too glossy, paint was too flat and shiny, undercarriage was painted body color and not left in primer/oversprayed with paint color. That's how the OE judging is, it's not for the faint of heart. I was happy with the Silver and I'll probably never do another to that level again. Well, year right. lol

I'm working on a couple right now that will show as stock but will have nearly everything original. I was lucky to find complete cars and that's how I want them, just not original colors for exterior and interior. We will restore or replace with correct everything but that OEM win just doesn't justify living with a gawdawful color that I won't be happy with. Too much time, effort and $$$ in paint. The cars will be gorgeous otherwise.
I know of many people who say they won't do another one or don't have the stamina to overcome problems. Some day I'll be writing about what I'm going through. It just makes me more determined to get them done!

Any photos of the drivers side of your carb? The linkage?

You talking to me? If so, one's auto and the other manual. I just pulled the carb out of the manual and will be sending it to the carb restorer.

Nope. That'll teach me not to quote the OP
