if you put a straight path between alt and batt two things are happening:
-with a discharged batt, the ammeter won't sense ( or gets a minimal sense ) that status, because is easier to the load going straight to the batt with that jumper. The ammeter is indeed somekind of resistance. Minimal, but still offers somekind of resistance the jumper saves.
-with engine off, the power to the main splice will run throught the jumper and alt wire because same reason as above, is an easier path to the load. Once again, no reading ( or minimal ) on ammeter.
BUT bulkhead weakness is still there to feed the main splice.
