Greetings, earlier this year I purchased a Mopar classic with a 440 and 727 auto. It has a mile shift kit that I would like to change back to a smooth shifting automatic.

First, why does anyone put a shift kit in an auto tranny. It seems hard on the drive train. As for putting it back to original what can I expect to pay for parts and what should I be purchasing.

IIRC, the shift kit will allow for crisper shifts, a normal transmission will slide into gear. A performance enhancer and can also be said to generate less heat and prolong the friction material on the drums to wear less. You're used to having it slide into gear instead of feeling it bang into gear.

You don't say whose make of Shift Kit it is, but most kits require the drilling of holes in the valve body somewhere. If you want to put it back to stock, you may have to get a non-modified stock valve body.
Transgo makes a few different versions of shift kits. The SK-TF which was known as the builders kit, and then of course the TF-2 for firm shifts for HD use and of course the TF-3 for a full manual valve body.
I've got the SK-TF in my transmission, and under normal throttle, you barely notice the shift points, but under WOT it'll bark the tires going into 2nd gear.

The shift kit you have may be too harsh and there are mild ones like the one you said you have .A shift kit will help prolong the life of that 727 by going into gear faster and giving you a firmer shift.Without the shift kit all you will have is a slow shifting hotrod.I would talk to a trans man and see if you can just change back to the stock valve body gaskets and replaced any check balls that was removed to give you that unwanted shift.

Thanks Guys....I am learning. I will decide what to do with it in the spring. I appreciate everyone's feedback - good information.

The Transgo TF-2 has 2 options: one for street and one for street/strip. I installed the TF-2 with the first option. I have a 3.55 posi rear and no bangs just nice positive shifts. Before, when it was stock, I couldn't tell when it hit 3rd.

I had a B&M shift kit put into my '69 'Bee and when I was younger, I loved chirping the tires at 50mph!
