Any input would help.My 1965 727 will not down shift when i slow down or turning a corner it should go down into second. It still has the original valve body. The passing gear works ,and it seems to shift okay.
Thanks for any advice

have you adjusted your throttle lever pressure (aka kickdown).. when does it normally shift from 1-2 and 2-3 (ie what mph/rpm)?

If it's a stock transmission, it could be downshifting and you're missing it. Have you pulled it down manually to confirm it is not downshifting? That's the first thing I would do. Confirm it 100% if you have not already. Torqueflites are pretty simple beasts. If it works well goin up, it should be workin well comin down.

Yes Rusty ,i have pulled it down into second manually,so im sure its not going down into second automatically .I have the lokar cables, everything works perfect except the down shift.im confused.I beleive from a stop it goes into second around 20-25 miles an hour and third around 35 ,under a light pedal ,so i think that is pretty good

i have never used the cable type.(always used mechanical or manual valve body)is there any adjustability?

if you do not have second gear, at all, then you most likely have a snapped or broken intermediate band. has the transmission been overhauled or is it still OE on the inside? 70 and below transmissions had solid bands for intermediate bands and they hardly ever break (unless under major abuse), but if it is a newer strap band, those snap quite easily.

Oh ya there is adjustment on the cables ,im just thinking that if everything else is working good the cable adjustment must be very close

Hi racedodge ,i have second gear ,its just not downshifting ,comming to a stop or slowing down for a corner. When i come to a complete stop ,it goes back into first.

complete stop, it should be in first.. under a light throttle, 1-2 shift happens around 12-16mph and 2-3 shift will happen around 25-32mph based upon the engine, converter, gearing and governor.

just an fyi

That part is working okay, just cant figure out why no downshift

mark where the cable is now and play with some adjusting.cant really hurt at this point can it?

Ya ive played with it some, maybe a little more will help

if it's a 65 trans. it's not gonna do a part throttle downshift. It will stay in 3rd till almost a complete stop. At slow speed full throttle will take it to 1st (be prepared). I hate this about my car also-65. You can change part of the valvebody to 68 model(I believe) as it's the only year that has provisions for part throttle kickdown and a rear pump check valve (very important) cause your trans. has a rear pump. Pat Blaas transmissions can hook you up. Thats what I'm gonna do

Thanks Doug, seems to be the nature of the beast.I like my drive train, but i think i will go to a newer trans one day,i think i read the 70,s 727 trans will bolt up to my poly.Of course i will have to install a floor shifter but i dont mind.My poly runs nice and pretty good at the gas pump.
Thanks everyone for the help
