Besides the kickdown adjustment, you'd be better off, verifying that your bands are adjusted right. Need an inch/pound torque wrench, to set them.
Two main things on the kickdown rod adjustment. 1) You want enough free travel, to let the carb go to idle. 2) Yes, a slight amount of 'play' on the rod, at WOT, so no binding.
You can always check the line pressure, with a gauge, to see if it's right, or needs to be re-set.
