727 Shifting from 2nd to 3rd is sloppy, what could it be?

I agree with this. sometimes kick down linkage adjustment (too aggressive) can make the problem worse. I have a TF2 kit in one of my torqueflites and low speed overlap is bad. backing off the kick down adjustment helps mine.
Mine is right the opposite. W/ the shift cable backed off a little less then 1/8", everything is good, except, if I`m not accelerating, it bangs too dam hard, rattles everything !

Like Ron stated earlier. It's all tIming of K/D band release and forward clutch apply. Number of forward clutch springs, front clutch clearance, lever ratio. K/D band adjustment, K/D servo springs, valve body calibration. Oil flow to the forward clutch can be restricted to slow the fill volume. That all being said I'd rather have a little overlap on light throttle than high load condition flare (slip).

Ill start with the simple stuff first and work my way up. Also Need to eliminate the possibility of a worn u joint or pinion gear on mine

let us know what Transgo says
U-joints use only genuine DANA / Spicer or OEM deep case hardened joints induction- electro hardening is too thin and the needles go through it
the ones with the grease fitting on the cap are easier to service than the ones in the cross

I talked to transgo earlier and got alot of good info. My situation probably will vary from others but the clunk sound from 2-3 is to be expected. The reason is because when my transmission was built, they fit as many clutches in as possible attributing to the firmness. So it is basically set up more like a heavy duty transmission. The band adjustment is not likely to change that. The harder shifting wont harm anything though.

Any worn ujoints or pinions will exaggerate the clunk sound though. Some linkage adjustment may be needed in my case if the 1-2 shift is too far apart from the 2-3 shift. I need to check on the mph on the shift points. I was advised by transgo there should be around a 50 percent difference between the two: for example if 1-2 came in around 16mph 2-3 should be around 32mph under light driving conditions. I need to check that on mine.

you also get a big clunk going into Fwd and especially R if you leave out one checkball (an unnecessary racer trick)
I did it in my trans and have had to put up with it for 300,000 miles
going to change my fluid and pull the valve body and put the ball back in

Now i want to put a cam and hipo heads in. My heavy duty trans is completely unnecessary for my stock 383. Lol.
