This has probably been done to death but I thought I would ask anyway. I am swapping a 742 open centre with a 741 sure grip centre. Is there anything I should know? Is it just a straight swap?
Just check so the yokes are same size, you can also take the sure grip unit and place it in the 742 house, if you have alot of power the 742 is stronger than the 741 the bearings are much stronger, you just need new bolts to the main gear and its only the backlash you have to set up again, take a look at this link. http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/howto/mopp_0308_mopar_rear_end_gears_set_up/photo_01.html
Thanks, you have me interested in swaping the sure grip and gears into the 742 house. Do I need different bolts for the gears? I will use the same gears from the 741.
741 gears doesnt fit in a 742 house or opposite, same with 489 house, gearbolts are supposed to be used only once and should be replaced, they are left threaded so go the wrong direction to get it right?? Same with the nut at the yoke replace it with a new one if you loosen it.
Thanks, got it now, I think i will stick with just a complete swap. the car is just a cruiser really. I'm only swapping because the sure grip is a 3.23 and the open is a 2.79. Will all depend on the condition of the gears when I pull the sure grip out. Thanks for the comments.
