8-3/4 Rear Fluid Replacement

Looking to check and replace the gear oil in my rear end. Looking at the manual looks like I just need to take out the square plug and pump it out. Any tips on removing that plug? Only thing I had that would fit on it were some channel locks and it does not seem to budge. Any recommended tools or techniques here? Don't want to damage it if I can avoid it.

Also, do we have a recommended gear oil? I picked up some Lucas synthetic 75W-90.

Pretty sure it still has the stock 3.23 gears as I found the metal tag still on one of the bolts.

If you have a Sure Grip you'll need a bottle of Friction Modifier and non synthetic is recommended.

This is exactly what the guy that rebuilt mine said and he was pretty firm about it.
He's done 100's of them...

How do I know if I have a suregrip again? Does that have to do with how the rear wheels spin? Both of mine spin together when you rotate one side by hand.

Lower one wheel to the ground and try to turn the other wheel. If you do have a SG in it, it should be hard to turn.....and of course, the car needs to be in neutral. And there should be a tag that says USE SURE GRIP LUBE on one of the nuts and don't forget to block the front wheels.

Yup....open end.....

A 3/4” 12 point socket takes the square plug out. You have a sure grip so don’t use synthetic oil.

That will work too and so will a boxed end wrench.....unless the plug is super tight.

12" adjustable wrench will give you more leverage.

A bottle jack with a short wrench that fits will do the job too!!

Drill and tap the housing near the seam for a 1/8" pipe plug and proceed with your service.
