8 3/4 Rearend for Wide Tires

I have heard that the narrowest 8 3/4 Chrysler built came off the 1965 Dodge/Plymouths? I want to find the narrowest year to put the widest tires I can under the back of my 64 without having to narrow it up or tub the car. When I was in high school my dad built a 1964 Dodge 330 and fit 12" wide Mickey Thompsons inside the rear wheel wells without any modifications other than a rear end swap and they fit perfect. That car looked great without sacrificing the body or style in any way. Any ideas here?

I placed a 66 Dodge 8 3/4 under a duster for this same reason. This rear end is the most narrow and allowed me to fit some HUGE tires without modification. Was it close to the lip---sure, but it fit nevertheless. I don't have the measurements on this particular rear axle in front of me, but I'm sure others will chime in.

I "think" these are correct numbers. There are many sources and as I have read, many show some wrong info. If these are wrong someone can say, then I can correct my data as well.
I also believe the reason for putting them in an A-body is to move the tires out further from the springs. Then you can run a deeper offset rim allowing more rubber.

the narrowest rear housing is a 68-70 A body 8.3/4 with big bolt pattern! getting hard to find but can be found around $200.00! I'd get a C body and have it narrowed! 65 B-body is the next one that will work, you'll still be limited on how wide you want to put under the car.

Was there BBP in A-body prior to '73? After '72, you could only get 8 1/4 in A-bodies. And as far as I knew there never was a BBP A-body 8 3/4.

There was never an A body 8 3/4 with the larger bolt pattern. A-bodies started coming with the larger pattern after 1973 and that is when the 8 3/4 was stopped in them. Conversion axles can be found easily enough.
The narrowest 8 3/4 axle with the larger bolt pattern would be in the early B bodies (1960's).
I had heard that the 62-65 B axles were an inch narrower than the 66-70 B axles but have not been able to confirm.
I have an 8 3/4 in my 65 Belvedere and could measure it.

If the OP does not want to tub the car why not just use a different offset wheel to get the maximum size tire the stock wheel tub will allow? A shorter rear end will not make any more room for a bigger tire....

my 65-67 8 3/4 measures exact to whats stated above
works in 62-65 b bodies is proven to work great 30x12.50 x15 or 29x 12.50 x 15 or 29x10.50x15 with superstocks or luniac launchers , cal tracs 1 inch up

X2. On my 1969 cars, the tires will hit the inner wheelhouses before the springs when everything is stock.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to finally give the OP the correct answer to his question. The solution is NOT a narrower rear end housing, its the proper offset wheels to accomodate the desired tire width.

You can install a rear from a 65-70 B body into the 62-64 B bodies. Just a bolt in. The narrowest being the 65-67 B body rear. Spring perches are already in the right place, a simple bolt-in.
