I have a factory manual, but it only covers service with the special tool.A1960 Dodge Service Manual is available at my mopar. Probably has tapered axles. http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109
It will probably be OK if you replace the shims exactly where you found them upon disassembly.I have a factory manual, but it only covers service with the special tool.
I was wondering if I could get away with that, with new new bearings? It will probably be OK if you replace the shims exactly where you found them upon disassembly.

Yes they are. I tried replacing seals, and repacking bearings, but still noisy. Are your bearings noisy?
As long as you get the correct length the standard style flanged axle shafts with Green bearings will fit the early housing. They have to be installed without the inner seals.

Yeah, works a lot better with correct end play. .040 was way loose. The end play for the key axle is .006 What year is for car. Remove all end play first and put .006 on the right.
