the 904 behind my 67 Sat 318 is ready for a rebuild or replace.
I met a vendor at Carlisle (rocket performance transmissions) but I've also seen A&A transmissions recommended.
I see A&A has a 904 street perf. trans for $1095. Not sure if that's shipped or if a core has to be shipped back.
I know the converter is just as important i'm planning to go with a good one after a little more research.

Curious what route others might go...rebuild existing or go with a recommended vendor?

If you have deep pockets, buy a rebuilt one. But if you're at all on a budget, consider rebuilding the one you got. Years ago, I rebuilt my first 727 transmission (very similar to your 904) before I rebuilt my first motor. It may seem intimidating, at first, but it's a pretty easy job with a rebuild kit. I recommend Tom Hand's book (available on Amazon) that takes the mystery out and has plenty of pictures. After reading the book, and watching a few YouTube videos, you'll be a pro.

Your 67 Satellite 318 originally had a 727. Are you certain it's a 904? What is the 5th digit of the VIN. Is it a D or F.

A real 1967 904 has some unique parts inside. If I remember right the converter hub is smaller than other 904's.

Input shaft size for 904 changed in 1968. 727 changed in 1967. I found out the hard way. Canadian cars still had a 318 Poly in 1967, with a 727. Not sure about 1967 U.S. cars. I just assumed that when the 318 became an LA engine in U.S. in 1967, it also got the 904, with the 727 an optional H.D. upgrade. I know that 1968 318's got the 904 in B-bodies.

car orig. came with a 273. I assume the 904 is original. Later, a 1976 318 block was installed. Then i became the owner. For sure its a 904 based on pan.

Ok that explains it. Wonder what torque converter they used?
2801535 will be the original number stamped on the drivers side pan rail.

I had my 904 rebuilt with a Transgo TF1 kit. It’s behind a well built up 340 and it’s been trouble free for 12 years. Why would you pay to buy a rebuilt when you just have to pay for rebuilding ?

All 904 converters use the same hub. What is different on the pre 1968 converter is the diameter of the pilot (goes into the crankshaft), it measures 1.550 inches. From 68 on the pilot was 1.810 inches.

That's just what I was talking about. So to use that 67 904 converter on a 318 the converter needs changed to a newer one.
