A few questions on 5.7 swap

Hi all, I have a 70 roadrunner project and am researching a 5.7 / 545rfe swap. I know that I'll have to do some tranny tunnel surgery but I have a few other questions.

. I am most likely going to get a truck 5.7 but I'm wondering if there is enough hood clearance as it looks like the truck intake sticks up more so just making sure that I will physically fit or why I need to do or use to make that work??

Also i am most likely going to stick with the stock style suspension and I am wondering if there are any other mods I need other than notching the k for the oil filter?

Also I would like to stay with the stock power steering box if I can, is there a stock exhaust manifold that will work with this configuration? I have heard that the jeep manifolds work, is this true?

I'm thinking that after getting it all in and running that I may possibly go with a single turbo but that is later on. Hence the manifolds?

Anything else I need to worry about?
I'm looking into finding a rollover vehicle pretty soon and just trying to make sure I have all my info correct as I'll probably go with an 04-10 ram 2 wheel drive and using as much as possible from it.

If hood clearance is the same as a 69 roadrunner the truck intake fits, with minor interference at the A/C lines. I did not notch my k frame for oil filter clearance I used a shorter filter and the angled adapter. As far as exhaust manifolds I used headers so no help there.

ok thanks, that looks like what most people are using. I'm still in the planning and parts collecting stages with this. But the car is semi apart with most the bodywork done and staring at me in the garage. I'm looking at getting an 04 wrecked ram 2 wheel drive and using the engine, trans, wiring harness, gas pedal and other odds and ends.

I'll use the tti mounts and poly locks most likely. I'll hopefully be able to use the stock exhaust manifolds. Then there is a guy within a half hour of me that does aluminum radiators so I'll probably have him do that part as he does awesome work and very reasonable. the roadrunner I have came with a new fuel tank so I'll have to figure out a pump to use in it. And I'm hoping to use the factory wiring harness and cut it myself, I did an Ls harness for a buddy and it was fairly simple but he was able to get the info somewhere. I haven't saw much for the hemi harnesses so if anyone has any that would be great. any input is great and anything I'm missing?

modifying the stock harness is pretty simple, wire in an asd relay, fuel pump relay and then there is only 6 or 7 wires needed to hook up to the car. everything else is stand alone. the throttle pedal responce is really slow from the trucks, have to get it tuned to make it more responsive. you can just use an external walbro fuel pump and then plumb in a fuel pressure regulator. just use the factory supply line for the return.

Have you tried to order your polylocks from Schumacher yet? I just tried to order mine today and they said they no longer offer them. They told me it was because the insulator material was melting because they were so close to the headers and had returns on them. They said that they now offer spool type motor mounts (not yet up on their website). Schumacher will be emailing me some pictures of their new motor mounts later today.
Anyone else ever hear of this?
We can modify the stock rubber insulators, but will there be a heat issue for the rubber as well?

Ok, Im ready to burn this ccard up a bit. where has the best deal on mounts and which are the bst to use with the stock k frame and power steering box? also which oil pan is better the milodon or charlies, and where to get it? anything else?

From the info I have been exposed to, none of the stock exhaust manifolds will work with our B bodies without re working the outlet because they do not turn down enough to enable a head pipe to be hooked up to them. I am working on a 6.1 with 545RFE transmission in my 68 Charger. I bought a kit from Bouchillon Performance for my install. You may want to call Randy there as he has had considerable experience with these installations. He provided me with the oil pan, motor mounts, TTI headers, offset oil filter, and some AC fittings since my car has AC. My AC compressor caused an issue with the TTI left side header needing to be dinged a bit but if you don't have AC, they would fit great. I don't have mine put together yet but I did a mock up and the tunnel needed the most surgery. I raised the tunnel about 1 1/2" and needed to cut out the TB cross member and weld in a new piece to enable the transmission to fit up high enough. If your car does not have AC you can use a fly by wire gas pedal. My car did not have enough room for the fly by wire pedal so I need to use my factory pedal and convert to the fly by wire under the hood. I have a couple of the fly by wire pedals that I tried to make work so if you are interested in one of them, let me know. I bought a computer and harness from Bouchillon also. Don't have any of it installed yet as the body is not back from getting surgery. A couple more things you will need to think about is what you will do for a speedo since the truck 5 speed has an electronic sender. Bouchillion has an adaptor that converts the signal to a cable if you want to use your cable drive speedo. I went with a GPS speedo so don't need to worry about that. Also you will need to install a water temp and oil pressure sender to be able to use your factory gauges.

Thanks sixpack. I'll do some more looking. You have any pictures and measurements of that trans tunnel surgery? I'd like to see what all will need to be cut since I am doing everything... I guess, if any of the stock exhausts manifolds have been used by turning them around or upside down for a single turbo setup I would like to see that. I may jus go ahead and do it instead of wasting 800 on some headers that I would be taking out later... has anyone had much success using the stock computer running a single turbo? just wondering.

Here are some pics of what I did with my tunnel. As you can see, it was a bit more than a couple whacks with a ball pean hammer. A good tin bender would have made it look nicer but it will be covered up for the most part. The 1st pic shows what I cut out of the TB cross member. 2nd pic shows the stiffener added back in for the relocated cross member bolt.
I don't have any measurements but you can see my tunnel is raised up 1 1/2" and my console will be 1 1/2" higher because of it. I wanted the tunnel up to make room for the shift cable to be able to fit above the transmission. I don't have all the t's crossed or i's dotted but it is starting to come around. The last few pics show what I did with the Transmission cross member. I put in a unmolested cross member to show the surgery I did to make it work. Hope it helps. I can get some measurements of whatever you would like. On another note, I have the 6.1 exhaust manifolds that will fit your 5.7 if you want to cut them up to try to make them work. I won't be needing them.

Here are a couple pics of the exhaust manifolds. My engine came out of an 06 Charger SRT8 so that is what these manifolds are. The ends would need to be cut off and turned down to enable them to work on a B body. As they are, they are aimed at the firewall and would be almost impossible to install a head pipe to them. I didn't want the headache so went with TTI's headers.

Hello, I too am installing a 08 5.7 in a 65 satellite with a kit from bouchillon. Don't know what gas pedal to use that will fit Saw your comment about the under hood fly by wire.Could you please fill me in on that?

My 68 Charger has the A/C heater box. Way too big under the dash for the fly by wire gas pedal. No room between the heater box and steering column. My fix was to use the stock gas pedal and use the bell crank assembly from an 2004 Ram truck. Here are a couple pics showing the under dash area and the bell crank circled in yellow in the under hood pic. If you don't have air, you should have room for the fly by wire pedal. They are kinda ugly in my opinion but you will have to decide which way to go.
