A833 4 speed

Dumb question to most of you....Does the A833 4 speed have a noticeable gate / detent going into 3rd and 4th. 1st and 2nd are easy. Im used to top loaders. My friend that has had classic muscle cars his whole life found 3rd and 4th no problem. I recently purchased it so give me a break.

so with this type of trans, no noticeable gate or detent. does it mainly depend on speed and RPM for the transition from 2nd into 3rd?

If your shifter is in good condition, there is some noticeable detent between third and fourth gear, similar to first and second. As a young man, I learned to shift between second and third without using the clutch by just a blip of the throttle. Worst damage i ever did to a 833 4-speed was to break 1-2 shift fork.

The synchroniser rings should allow smooth shifting in any gear no matter what the speed or engine RPM - within reason.
The only noticeable detent/lock out should be reverse gear.
The forward 4 gears should be able to be selected easily without noticeable hang-ups.
There are quite a few moving/sliding parts in a shifter/gearbox some allowance needs to be made for this.
The A833 is comparable to the Ford Toploader in it's operation IMO.

1st and 2nd where easy. I just thought there would be more of a knob shift over from 2nd to 3rd. I found them by accident twice and as expensive as the airfilters were, I thought I'd better ask around. Im an airline mechanic so I don't deal with this everyday. This is my first classic muscle car, so I don't want to "F" it up.

There are detents in the side cover.

Then its me then, my friend found 3rd and 4th fine. I was probably going too slow to mesh.

so its really not a traditional "H" pattern that I'm used to.

I would check the shifter adjustment before getting too carried away.
I have seen a lot of people get it wrong.
The 4 forward gears are H pattern - with the stock shifter.
They don't shift like a modern gearbox but they are pretty good if all parts are working correctly.

Ok mine has a Hurst shifter in it. If that means anything.

In neutral you have a horizontal gap between the 1-2 and the 3-4 pattern. Your shifter will slide easily over once you come out of second to shift to 3rd, sort of like a diagonal pattern. You don't have to make a positive up and over move. Drive your car enough to become familiar with it. You will have no problems if you're shifter is good.

Mine has a Hurst shifter. When my friend drove it, I did not see the knob shift over to the right when he went from 2nd to 3rd. 1st and 3th where in the same position or it appeared that way; as did 2nd and 4th.

Toploaders, Muncies, T10s and A833 all have detents acting on the shift forks to assist in holding the shift fork and slider engaged in the gear selected, although the slider assembly does the heavy lifting to keep a gear engaged and not kick out. The detent is normally just a brief hitch in shifter effort and should not make engaging a gear difficult. The detent action should be reasonably uniform in each gear.

Just push the shifter forward and to the right at the same time to go from 2nd to third. It will slide through the gate by itself.

Hurst shifters usually have a slightly narrower gate between 1/2 and 3/4 than factory shifters and have a spring that lightly positions the shifter in the 3/4 gate, requiring that in neutral it will have to be pulled over to the 1/2 gate to select first or second. You probably will get used to it after a few miles.
