I read a Herb MCcandless tip in a magazine decades ago. It said to adjust the shifter as per factory, then you either add one full turn on the 3-4 rod or subtract one full turn on the 3-4 rod and it works like a charm, the shifter will glide into 3rd. I can't remember which way though and I'm not going to look for the article. I think it was add a full turn, you can try that and if it doesn't work go the other way.
