Bone head mistake here....i let my car run for a few minutes today for the first time in a while and when i got shut the car off i noticed that there was some trans fluid underneath the converter and i pulled dipstick and am overfilled some. If I just drain this extra out will I be ok? and just check again when at operating temp and in neutral.... I am just hoping this isnt a seal issue?? I never had a seal go bad or anything before. The trans in this car has new front and rear seals and never leaked like this until today. Small spot 4" diameter about.

How over full is it? Usually a quart won't make things leak.....

i guess more than a quart, if one quart dont make it leak. i am going to drain some out...still cant believe i did this somehow

I just checked and it is over the full level. I will have to drain some out and re check it when the car is warmed up again. I added this fluid months ago, i guess there was some in the trans when i put it in and then when it warmed up today was the first time I had fired the car since. Let it warm up, shut car off and just looked underneath out of habit and there was the fluid. So this happened just today so I am hoping there isnt damage to a seal or anything....just drain excess and hopefully no more leaks....

How much over the full level? Not to insult you but the car should be in neutral and at operating temp when you check the auto trans fluid btw

If you haven't already done it, install a drain plug in the tranny pan while you have it off. It makes life much, much easier....well, at least the part of life that pertains to trans fluid draining will be easier. Everything else will still be pretty much the same.

Although you can stick a thin hose down the filler tube to extract some ATF, if you have a lot to remove you can also detach the line going into the transmission cooler and let the pump push out some fluid into a catch can. It won't take long.

Your torque converter may already have a drain plug in it. That would be easy.

I just unbolted the speedo gear bracket and pulled the gear out about an eighth of an inch and it drained easy. Got about a quart out before the draining stopped. Tightened all back up and checked fluid (cold) and it was a little over full still but not much. I am going to warm the car up today and will check again when it is at temp.

I don't think being overfull by a quart is a problem. A mechanic I know used to work at a dealership in the late 70's early 80's. He said they had a bulletin from Chrysler for some shifting problems on some 727's, the solution was to overfill them by a quart.

I keep my diesel a bit over full too because I know it doesn't take much for it to start shifting lousy when it's a tad low. It was leaking at the dip stick tube and I've since fixed it and that's how I found out that being barely low affected shifting.

As stated always check it running, warm, in neutral.

NEVER EVER EVER overfill an automatic transmission. It is not the same as an engine. An overfull automatic transmission will very easily agitate the fluid and start causing very undesirable operation symptoms, in addition to leaks. Get the excess fluid out of there.
