only down side is opening that -for you- long exhaust earlier costing some mileage and cruzing power out the exhaust

Back in the day with stock engines we used to pull the T cover and advance the cam 1 tooth. Lots more power/torque and better mileage or at least the same mileage but never lost any mileage. Kim
 
Back in the day we used to retard a tooth then adjust with keys and use really low gears and rev the snot out of them for stock classes that required a stock stock cam
I would not do that advance tooth skip with any compression at all
 
We have always installed cams advanced 2 degrees to consider it "installed" straight up to allow for no load or tension on the chain. Some shops are getting away from doing that, but it's always made sense to us, it's still how we install cams, and Tim at bullet cams says thats is still correct. Which means a cam installed straight up is actually "running" retarded 2 degrees and advancing it 4 is only actually advancing it 2 degrees advanced while it's running. There really is no quantitative way to know what the timing chain is doing, but we still install them +2 to consider them "running" straight up. But how she runs in the end most important.
