All,

The air grabber on my 71 RR stopped working recently. I haven't messed with it at all, it just stopped. All of the vacuum lines are hooked up properly and it looks like it's not getting enough vacuum to open the door. I'm not really familiar with how these work. If I have the car running and try to open the door manually, it just shuts from the spring tension.

Thanks!

Erik

First check if the hoses are indeed getting vacuum, and not blocked. Did you check the switch ?

Agree with the above, first. Next, consider the possibility the actuator is no longer working. You can check the actuator with a handheld vacuum pump/gun. You should be able to disconnect the lines from the car to the actuator and hook up the vacuum from the pump to the actuator to see if it raises the door. If it does not, you might need a replacement actuator. They are known to fail eventually, especially after 50+ years.

It's possible that the under dash solenoid valve has failed or is clogged. This valve, powered by 12 volts, with the key in the run position, is in the N96s vacuum circuit, that dumps the vacuum to the actuator, causing it to close, on power down. This valve lives on the instrument panels bottom flange, near the ashtray. This solenoid valve works in conjunction with the instrument panel mounted vacuum valve (switch). There used to be a fellow that repaired the vacuum actuator assembly...but not sure he's still in business......
