Almost positive i know the right answer, but.....

Just had a thought. Best friend has a F150 Ford she's not using, probably weighs 2000 lbs less than my diesel. Could easily drag the trailer back with it. Maybe I need to make a call......
I used to transport my 16' flat bed car hauler with my 95 Dakota V6 with 3.55 gears.....just turned off the OD on it. Gas mileage was never really good with those trucks tho.
2002 Chevy Silverado diesel quad cab, will probably barely fit on my 14 ft trailer.
That truck on a 14 footer? It would fill my 16 footer and IF the rear wheels weren't about to hang off the tail, you'll have a lot of the truck hanging past the tail. Plus you would probably have too much weight on the tail and you probably know how that acts. The rental car sounds like a good idea if you can't get a friend to follow you....

My 96 2wd could get 22 on the highway empty. My 4wd. 18 was the best I ever got.

I measured, the wheelbase would fit, the front bumper will clear the winch box, but there would be a bunch of bed hanging off the ***. Heck, the 62 has a foot or two hanging off the back. I'm used to it.
I wouldn't worry about tongue weight, that v8 diesel is heavy. But it's the total weight that scares me.
Gonna check into the rental car charges and availability, verses a couple tanks of gas, and a couple extra 4-5hr drives.
I think I have given up the idea of carrying the diesel, but I haven't yet talked to my friend about her F150.

My 87 would do 21 22 on the road and 17 18 in town....it was carbed with 2.94 gears. Heck, my 92 5.2 with 3.90 gears got 15 hauling a jet boat to Dallas driving the speed limit but it got 15 on the way back without the boat and trailer doing well over the speed limit! The 95 and the 96 are almost hand and hand the same mpg. No, I'm not much of a fan of the V6's in them. The only reason that I bought the 96 was because it was too nice to pass up.
 
My friend had an old U haul box truck,he used to put a car in the box of the truck and drive the car back after dropping off the truck. He has ramps

I could get my Opel or Cortina inside the box, but man, is it a looong ways up. Gonna need some long, strong ramps.
 
That's an excellent suggestion. Gonna look into that this morning when the local Enterprise opens up.

I went into my local socal Enterprise (they are the closest agency in both Bullhead and Claremont. )
Helpful young lady, says they DO do one,way rents, but she couldn't provide any more info. Said to use our internet site, (tried, either they are hopeless or I am) or the phone number she gave me. I haven't called yet. I'll talk to my friend with the F150 tomorrow..
 
Why rent one way? It's like $29 for a one day local rental. Rent a 150 at home. Trailer it to your destination. Unload and use it to tow the trailer home. Return the truck same place you got it.

According to what I've read online,hertz's ultra cheap rate only applies to local use, and lasts only for as long as the store is open (maybe eight hours)
No way I get to AZ and back in eight hours, or ten or twelve, for that matter.
I did find a company (it's still on my phone, can't remember the name, never heard of them before.) that will rent a ranger or Maverick for under $50/24hrs/ unlimited mileage.
If I can figure out how to get home for less than a cab ride or Uber, that might be the way to go.... depending on if it has a hitch, and what kind of wiring.
 
Take your car, pick up the rental, leave your car there. Drive it home when you drop off the rental.
 
If you're dragging a loaded trailer there with your truck, then dragging an empty trailer home, your fuel costs go up, so don't forget to figure that into the equation.
