I remember seeing this discussion before and now I had to remove the dash... should I just plug the black/red together and bypass the gauge?

Car was on fire once, don't want it to happen again. :)
Thanks.

Real question is what caused the fire? Bulkhead connection ? I have never bypassed mine in any off my cars but bought a quick disconnect for my battery. Yes bolt and shrink wrap the two together if thats what you feel you need to do.

Bypassing your ammeter will not prevent a fire, unless it is shorted to ground. As stated above, the bulkhead connecter is a trouble spot.

@Mopewbie

You just have to restore/fix to factory conditions, and proceed with the propper upgrades.

You don’t bypass the gas line when pump fails.

Technically it’s an ammeter, no shortage of posts/threads about ammeters here. The pictures of the ammeter and terminals in OP show no indications of previous heat damage. As mentioned focus on the weakest link in the original charging system, the Packard terminals in charge path in the bulkhead connector.

Decided to check the bulkhead. Saw a wire I was dubious about and decided to remove the tape.... this is what I found.

Tape was over the first one and they round around the next one, and so on....
(The one I wanted to check was the last one, obviously)

Can you hear that thing ticking. It's a bomb waiting to go off. If it were me I would be buying some new wiring if I wanted to keep my car from burning down.

Once again, the truth floated on.

Healthy wiring and believe it or not a powerful alt (anything better than the stock) able to keep feeding the car without constantly request power from batt will save the installation.

Aside newer acc added long the years, correctly added to the alt side and not to the batt when ammeter is present.

And no, the straight alt-batt path is not the solution.
