I think I have a simple ?, and need some help, but have a 71 Satellite 383 and removed the A/C compressor and components cause I thought it was deadweight. I have a new alternator, but might have plugged the field wires incorrectly . Looking from behind I have the green wire on the left, the purple/white stripped wire in the middle and the ground on the right. I went to other web sites but the website pictures are deceiving. Need your help or if anybody knows of similar question asked on this forum please let me know and if there are photos, even better, sure appreciate it.

Thanks, Kernel Sanders, for the response. I switched them around and now the voltmeter goes left when before it went right. Thanks again, Kernel.
