Hello

Can I replace my 1 wire round back style alternator on my 1967 Coronet with a square back style 1 wire model. Are the wires the same for both ? I have the 1 female connector and the one to the post . If so , are the voltage regulators the same for both ?

Thanks

No replys yet............., my main concern is if the external voltage regulators are the same, I am pretty sure you can use either style of alternator, but I thought I would ask to make sure.

Thanks

If you're talking about the 1970's style alternator with the two field terminals it's an easy swap. I added a 65amp square-back to my '65 Coronet years ago.

Just follow this diagram for the older system and ground one of the field terminals on the '70-up alternator. You can reuse your old-style voltage regulator and resistor:

If you want to step up to the later-style voltage regulator the same page I got this pic from has a schematic. I didn't because I wanted to keep mine looking period.

I've run this for over 10 years with no problems, including stepping up to an MSD 6A box. (Well, had to replace the old points-style voltage regulator with a lookalike solid-state unit when it went bad ;) But you'd want to do this anyway - it smoothes out the current flow)

If you're talking about the late-model Nippondenso alternator Rick Ehrenberg from Mopar Action has swap info here, but it's a little more involved....
