I'm no Anne Heche fan but after seeing the OP's post yesterday I looked her up. She hasn't had exactly a privileged life, being raped by her father from an infant to 12 years old, her brother died at a young age, a sister died of brain cancer etc. She did quite well to still make something of herself although it's clearly been there in the background for a long time and has now caught up with her. Normal" people have gone off the rails after similar experiences I'm sure.

The person in the house was a renter. Sometimes renter's insurance sorta sucks. I'm sure Heche has insurance.
It -was- an old 850 sq/ft house built in 1952. 25' x 100' lot. And looks to be owned/passed down for at least 50 years judging by the (fixed) taxes they pay on it. ... Still, it was worth a little over a million bucks.
Sucks for the owners too. That's a very substandard lot. I see the knock downs on that block are 1900-2000 sq-ft. And worth about $1.8 mil. I have a feeling the the construction cost will not justify the new rent. And then the new property tax could likely go up NINE times! Or, it could reset the for additional sq/ft above 850... then tax would just go up maybe 4 times
Very likely it will never be a rental again. And an "affordable" rental will be lost from the neighborhood for good.

Zillow says rent should be $2974. Looking at Google Maps, that place was pretty old and not really "freshened-up"
But the lowest 2 bd, 1 bath, 772 sq/ft older apartment nearby is $2400/mo. That's not a house.
I would think it would be safe to say it's $2500/mo

A lot of us stupid kids didn't survive. I lost 8 classmates to class keggars from a school of 1,200. None of us believed it would happen to them.
Today, I am a stickler for the exact speed limit in town and the Interstate. In town is not wanting to run over anything and Interstate is the cheap old fart saving gas. Every mph over 60 burns a lot more fuel.
I lost classmates too. She didn’t get smart, and we have Uber now too. Keep right except to pass. Sheesh.
