Another 2.94 vs 3.55 thread

am all in on the 2.94 gears. have a 2.94 sure grip on my 440 67 Newport that goes side ways off the line if you want it to. going with 2.94 sure grip on my 440 67 RT now has 3.23 sure grip. I say 2-3 mpg over the 3.55 gears on the highway. I am getting 17 mpg at 60 mph with the Newport. the 2.94 gears pulls at higher speeds like a freight train faster than the RT. the combo is what it takes most cars don't have the right combo by reading a lot of posts about no bottom end on their 440 and even on some of the 500 stroker and the combo is the problem. with the right mild one step over the stock camshaft, no single plane intake, no over ported heads and along with a 383 HP stock 11 inch torque converter over the stock 12 inch converter to get it off the line into the power curve. Down side maybe 2 tenths in the 1/4 mile who cares on the street.

Daily driven, long road trips, and $8 gas? 2.94s, 100%.
But perspective has been altered by overdrive transmissions.
My parents and I put 180,000 miles on a 55 chevy with stock 3.55 gears, including many many 1200 mile trips.
( but gasoline was less than 50 cents for about 150,000 of those miles.)

The beauty of the 8-3/4 is that you can swap pumpkins in about and hour. Used to run 3.91’s around town, swapped to 2.91’s when I had to do a road trip. My Bee came with 3.23’s, I agree it’s a nice compromise.

This.

3.91 was the typical hot rodder’s street gear when I started in the mid-70s. 4.56 gears on the street were not uncommon at all. My 383 GTS daily driver had 3.91s, my 340 DD had 4.10s.

Today, the 3.23 is the new 3.91. I think I’m getting old too.

Your still in the times. When I bought my 70 RR in 81 it had 4:56 but to much for me and I played with 3:55 and :91 and eventually with my driveline I Seattle’s on 3:91abd never went back but that’s me
