just picked up a toy hauler, 1993 2wd d250 with the 5.9 cummins. 172k miles. No belt squeal or pulley noise, but the belt is trying to walk off the tensioner pulley towards the front of the truck. Only thing keeping it on is the bracket holding the pulley. Belt travel takes it from crank, to tensioner, to AC compressor, then to the alternator. Have the belt riding as far back as possible on everything.
Do I just have a bad tensioner pulley, or is something else going on?

Sounds like something is worn-out. Probably a tensioner.

The tensioners don't last forever. While the engine is running, can your hear a clicking noise? If so, tensioner is on it's last leg, replace asap!

Change the tensioner, then the stationary pulleys. Check alternator bearing and a/c compressor bearing. Belt too if you have not.

Definitly take the belt off and check the tensioner bearing and make sure your waterpump is not getting a little loose.I own 6 pickups Cummins 5.9s and have replaced more waterpump than any other parts on them.

Truck should have lots of life left in it. I retrofit 5.9s out of old buses into 70's Era tractors. Many of them have 250k on them when I pull the motor and still use no oil and have good valves, bearings, ect

the above replies are spot on i'm fairly sure you will find a worn out tensioner

I thought I was the only guy who did that. Lol

No noise from the motor, it sounds fantastic. Will pull the tensioner tomorrow
