My son moved from Colorado to Conway Arkansas last year because he wanted a change of scenery, and he had a friend there.

He is having a devil of a time finding a job. He had a start date, but the company postponed it a couple times then rescinded the offer. That set him back unfortunately.

He has a business degree and experience in hospitality and real estate loans. He’s a really great guy, and I’m not just saying that because he’s mine.

Does anyone know of any leads?

Unemployment is pretty low here but we are a small population state. If he’s not connected to Conway he may need to look around up in NW AR as that’s where a lot of the growth is concentrated. It’s also a really nice part of the State. But I’m long retired out of Engineering and not in the know for those fields. Good luck to him - I hope he finds something.

I appreciate the reply.
I talked to him today, he has an appointment with an employment firm tomorrow.
Then Saturday he is going to a hiring event at Westrock Coffee, which lookes really interesting.

In my opinion, its tough to cut through all of the HR department's computer models and personality testing to actually get hired these days.

I agree completely. This past year, at age sixty four I find myself applying on a job. I haven’t had to apply on anything in way more then twenty years. Some of the questions had me shaking my head. Most of them had to do with how politically correct I could be in a, ummm, diverse workspace. I had to bite my tongue and tell them what they need to hear.
But two of my favourites were: Question: what would you do if you were talking with one of your coworkers and they said something inappropriate? Answer: I don’t spend a lot of time talking to people. I do my job then I go home. But if something like that were to happen I would discuss it with the person and if necessary take it to my immediate supervisor.
Question: Could you easily lift forty pounds? Answer: If I needed to I could pick you up over my head. She responds with “Oh my!” I ultimately got the job.
But I heard of genuinely dumb questions being asked by other places. One of my summer students had applied for a job at a university. One of the questions was “If you could be an animal what would you be?” I have no polite, correct response for that.

It has to be way harder now, I always went with past “exploits “; I never had a problem.

There are always jobs in the Camden, AR area supporting solid rocket manufacturing. Several aerospace companies have facilities there. Not exactly a great fit for his experience, but there may be ways to leverage his background & skills and apply them in new ways for salaried business or operations positions. There are usually a lot of hourly jobs as well if he wants to work with his hands. I don't know about the pay levels offered or what he is seeking.

He did get a job. Some kind of inside sales or phone support.

I think it will pay his bills so that’s good. I think he will ultimately get something better, maybe come back to Ohio.

Yeah, that’s the world I used to know. Now they are more worried about you being a H.R. and legal liability then if you can do the job.
When I briefly thought I didn’t need to finish the last two classes for my high school diploma, I came to Saskatoon. I applied at a Service station hired immediately when they found out I was from a farm. If you wanted a job in automotive, building or other similar areas you were welcomed.
Three years before that almost any one could get a job anywhere if they came from a rural background.
I did go back that fall, went hunting, took the last two classes after Christmas and graduated.
And life carried on.

If I were young and in Arkansas, I'd go after becoming a state trooper. :)
Have y'all seen the videos on YT of those guys? They're full-tilt PIT monsters apparently!

When he’s between jobs, have him go dig for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park.

One of my former clients, FIS in Little Rock, is a great company. Folks seemed reasonably happy to be there. Not a sweat shop at all which is a concern now days.

I’ll let him know. Thanks!

He's found a job, now it will be much easier to get a better job. He is now well past half way to that better job.
