Are there any other scientists on the forum?

My older son has a master's degree in physics. His interest is in high energy stuff.
While he was at Syracuse university he designed and built fixtures for a particle collider.

Now he works for the university of Rochester in the laser lab where he's in charge of the targets.

Very bright but can't find his shoes occasionally.

Scientists explore the natural world and show us how and why it is as it is. Discovery is the essence of science. Engineers innovate solutions that destroy the natural world.
:p

There's a few guys around here that act like they are brain surgeons! :BangHead:
One in particular that immediately comes to my mind. Kind of can't believe he hasn't spouted off all his degrees on this thread yet. Probably sitting in a corner somewhere counting all his money.....

I loved the artwork on EL&P's Brain Salad Surgery. It was done by H. R. Giger the same guy that designed the Xenomorph and a lot of stuff in the Alien movies. I went over to a girlfriend's house in high school. I was so wasted when I got there. We watched a concert on TV with ELP. When the piano started spinning around I really thought I was hallucinating.

I did a PhD in biomedical engineering and do clinical vascular medical imaging research. Basically I’m investigating how vascular devices (e.g. stents) work in clinical trials before they are released to the masses. I also teach graduate level biomedical imaging courses on the side at CSU.

Before I did my doctorate degree, I got my BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering.

For the one underground in Switzerland? Check out that hideous typo on the headline - for real that was on TV.

yes the one in Switzerland.
He would have to explain what parts he designed and built.
But it was pretty intricate stuff with unbelievably tight tolerances.
They had to build a clean room as part of the project.

As the Geo on a drilling rig, that's what they call them, I liken it to being a captain on a pirate ship. We're out in the middle of nowhere in all kinds of weather. I'm working with the dregs of society and I have to keep their loyalty and their respect. I have written letters to judges keeping my roughnecks out of jail. It's a 24/7 job, sleep when you can. But it pays well. It's scary making multimillion-dollar decisions.

My BS is in Electronics Enginenerding, but I'm at the point where I question everything I was taught.

Owning a body shop for some time, I fired the manager. I had a good man in the shop, so I called him in and told him I wanted him to be the new manager. He said I don't have much formal education. I said, this isn't rocket science, I think you can do this.

My favorite teacher saying was "good enough for government work".
Although science is the search for the truth, it is difficult to find examples where science and government are not intertwined.
Historically, there have been more bad and debunked "science" than there has been "proven / accepted" science.
Even the science we have accept and use often has exceptions, but usually gives acceptable and useable results that are "good enough for government work".

If I Knew Then What I Know Now.
:D

I am not degreed but I do have a DD214!!! cr8crshr/Bill:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: :usflag: :usflag: :usflag:
Gots one of dem too....like lots of others here do! And depending on what you had to do, getting that could be a feat in itself.

My brother in law was a geologist and was the same way. He also had 'learnin' in engineering and tried to over engineer everything he did. His IQ was pretty high and was the same way about 'things'......couldn't find stuff let alone 'can't get there from here stuff. There was the day he thought he could 'rake' the yard using my gas blower (not a large one) and after burning 3 tanks of gas, he finally sat down for a smoke break and that's when I walked out to the front yard and grabbed the blower. It never ran quite the same after that. He was using the blower because he was living with us and thought he was helping out. One attribute is that he didn't talk down to others so that made conversing with him a joy....most times lol.

How tight were the tolerances? The refinery I worked at had a lapping room for lapping seals etc in the machine shop that measured in light bands. It wasn't hard to do until someone came in and used the lapping tables without knowing how to used them and that's where the work was in getting them straightened out again.
I’m just a electrician
I've done home stuff and wired my shop myself....110 and 220. Rather not do it though lol.

There's "dregs'' in all walks of life. I've worked with all kinds of people and plenty of "dregs" too and there were times that I'd pick working with the "dregs" over the 'eddycated' aholes. Besides, I've met several that acted like they were "dregs" but were actually good people and educated too.
