Hi all
I bought a set of SW Chrome Rallyes & after 6 months they have rusted !!
Sent them pics & their reply?
"You have used Mag Wheel Cleaner on them & void your warranty"
WTF? I have only hosed them down a couple of times & Satellite aint even on the road yet.
Anyone else had dramas with this company?

#0000 Super fine steel wool will take that right off and is even fine enough to clean glass. Put a polish or protectant on it afterwards, but you'll still have to keep up with the steel wool a bit more now that corrosion has set in.

Sorry to here your bad luck with specialty wheel....Thanks for the heads up

Mate if you look at the second pic that was cleaned with steel wool & a cleaner but the rust is so bad it is basically bare metal now. The centres are fine it is just the crappy rims (Chinese maybe?)

I bought a set of Magnum 500's. Waxed them after install and again before putting into dry storage for winter. Next summer I noticed a small 1/8" rust spot on one. I was in the 15th month of ownership. Their warranty is only for 12 months so I was screwed. And the rep on the phone... total jagoff!!! Beware of Specialty!!!

I used Vintiques with great sucess. You got Chinese junk there and were screwed. Did you buy them with a credit card? I'd dispute the charge if you did.

Man that sucks!! Wow...What a bunch of punks, selling garbage

The Cragar SS wheels on my 70 Bee did that, and I had to steel wool them about every 2 weeks. I don't know how old they were though, could have been 20 for all I know.

i'd report them to the better business bureau thats total bs when we spend our hard earned money on peoples products they should take care of it when theres a problem.

Quality of chrome plating has really gone downhill in the last dozen years or so. I left a fairly new motorcycle (2003) in a closed shed for about a year, and when I pulled it out, all the chrome was either pitted or rusted. Major bummer.

Man, that sucks! Now I read about this, I have 4 of them in boxes, I just got them to put on my new car for the Spring! I hope the finish will last longer, maybe I should try and unload them right away?
Ben

Sorry mate! That looks like "flash chrome". Good chrome has a layer of nickle and copper under it.

Hi
Sent email to BBB and filed a complaint. As expected SW came back that I had caused the rust by using a cleaner..... They also claim that since they started making chromed rims in 1982 mine was the FIRST complaint....total BS !!
Sent a response so waiting to hear from BBB.

Mr

That sucks Man. Are they going to do anything to correct this?
Yes they are in full denial...

Based on the photos and comments provided by Mr. Paynter, we have determined there are no defects in workmanship or materials in the wheels Mr. Paynter received from us. The simple fact that we have been in business since 1982 building chrome wheels, and this is our first complaint is wonderful proof of our quality materials, processes, and workmanship.

Well after filing a complaint to BBB I got nowhere...SW just deny there is a problem & say I am a fool for using Mag Wheel Cleaner on them.... I am looking into getting them re-chromed by a local shop who do it right !!!

I'm sorry to hear that this company won't stand behind its products. If the rims cant take a couple of months of standing outside in the elements, I would sure hate to see what they look like after a year or two of driving on them. I am sorry for your bad luck, but am glad you posted this info. I always thought that these were a smart looking rim and was looking into buying a set, this totally changes my mind on products from Specialty Wheel. Has anyone bought chrome ralley wheels from a diffrent supplier and had good luck with them? I really don't understant why aftermarket companys have to be so cheap on chrome plating, OE chrome lasts for years of abuse on daily drivers, getting salt or calcium spray on it, yet something like valve covers/air cleaners (and in this case, rims) start rusting out of the box. Thanks again, and good luck on the rechroming.
Rick

I agree.... a good chrome job is three layers ( tin, nickel, chrome) and lasts decades.

Even getting stuff rechromed around here is a crapshoot these days. Because of the impact it has on the environment, the government has really regulated the heck out of it. Most of the chrome shops around here have gone out of business. (Or were forced out). Other shops aren't cleaning out their tanks as often now because of the costs involved.
