Anyone Ever Use Landing Lights as High Beams?

I was just looking at an old picture of a Road Runner that had 100W aircraft landing lights in place of the 4001 37.5W high beams, and wondered if anyone had ever used these types of lamps on their cars? The new landing lights put out close to 250W, which would make for one helluva high beam. :)

Good old fashion high beams are fine with me.

Back in 1980 I ran Osram 75/100 H4 bulbs in my headlights with 100 watt bulbs in each of my fog lights & driving lights on my Arrow.

Be careful RC, might get this thread removed...not sure the policy on clothed nipples.

I run 100w hella 4000s on my Tacoma as supplemental high beams (as well as some 55w HID converted 500s as aux lamps - mucho lumens). The 100w halogens are not DOT legal, but our cops don't enforce common sense laws, and I don't abuse their use, so f it. They are on the edge of what you'd want to use on the street...approaching some types of signs out on county roads can produce some pretty wicked glare/reflection back at you. Also something to consider is the wiring upgrades and shorter bulb life.

On the other hand, a 5 3/4" reflector is quite a bit smaller, so might not be too bad.

I bought them a while back, and mounted them in a 73 Challenger, but I never got around to the custom harness and relay setup that I felt I would need with that setup. The short answer is that I never got to try them. They came back out and went on the shelf. If I recall I had to notch the cups to accommodate them.

I've already upgraded the wiring and added the relays, so that part is done. I would be interested to see how much more light these would throw. I think the ones we used on P-3Cs were around 800W and they lit up a lot of real estate when we were on approach.

I have 2 of them somewhere in a Box.
Both from a EC-135E
(Simmilar to a 707)
They are from the "nose wheel landing gear"

We had two that were mounted to the nose gear and two that were in retractable housings under the wings.

One of they guys on the first gen forum years ago apparently tried it and fried the wiring. To much draw I guess unless hooked directly to the battery.
From what I remember ... but I am getting old :eusa_doh:

I bought 69 GTX roller in 1977 that had landing lights for high beams. I had never seen anything like them, the lenses were flat and they were bright as hell. My dad told me what they were and that I had better take them out because they were illegal, but I had an idea. :icon_idea:

I was delivering pizzas then and it was real hard to see the addresses on the houses sometimes, sooooooooooooo, I left them in....

"HOLY SH!T!" They turned night onto day and could light up the whole damned block! I had a lot of fun with them and never got in any trouble. (well, I got into a lot of trouble, but none of it was high beam related, well, I mean ....., oh nevermind!)

I had some as off-road lights on my old Jeep years ago, they were a million candlepower each and sort of, uh...grey market items. I used heavy gauge wire on a dedicated circuit and ran each off its own relay. That was then (late 80s). Now days there's plenty of options in high output lighting that will equal or surpass those old aircraft lights. There's really no need to jury rig anything to get super lumens, just Google off-road lighting or Hella or PIAA and there's tons of automotive lighting that'll be easier to install and use.

The heat is real bad about burning the paint around it, also very not legal.

I have had the aircraft lights in my 66 Charger since the late 70's.....also got the relay set-up for the lights as well...stock wiring will not handle these lights....is un-describable on how much light these put out....

I gotta take one out and replace it, if I can find one to match...looks like a rock hit it late last year....I was able to purchase these right off auto parts store shelf, and it's stamped on the rear of light "for aircraft or marine use only"

(never have lost a "high beam headlight fight yet" either"

I fergot to include picture

Let us know if you are able to find them.

Am I the only one that thought of the old Dallas Mopar board when I read the thread title?

Bruzilla, I thought you were interested in obeying the law. If you install those landing lights in your car you will be blinding on coming traffic from a great distance away. Plus you will be a law breaker. I would recommend you google how bright of a light you can use before you actually install ones that will cause you to get ticketed. Please don't write a book on how I am wrong about this as I have already looked it up and those are way too bright.
