Anyone Transplant a 340 into Their 68-70 Runner/Charger?

The 340, and later 360, were primarily for the a body cars. Not enough oomph for the heavier b body cars during the heyday. Only until 1971 did they offer it in b body cars. During the gas crisis, we actually did replace big block with small block in a few instances.

I don’t agree at all that the 70RR is much heavier than an A body. They are all around 3000 lbs. my 1970 Sport Satellite is 3225 lbs. 1970 Duster depending on gear is 3100 lbs. These are small block numbers and the Satellite was with aie ps ab pb! Now the 340 was rated low. Depending on Year they were putting out over 300HP. Lastly I just put a 340 in my 1970 Sport Satellite which has the identical body ad the Road Runner. The 340 puts out about 375 HP. This I believe was more that the 383 stock config. With a lighter modified A904 my combination is bitchen! It’s exactly what I wanted. I have had big blocks and I prefer the small blocks. The 340 is an outstanding motor. Go talk to the AAR guys! Having a 340 in a 1970 B body from the factory would’ve been a great match IMO.

Sorry, MF...Your numbers are a bit off the mark. My 70 Charger with a 318 was 3660. Tell me where the extra 460 lbs is between my 318 car and yours?

Try ALLPAR or something directly car related. Better yet, take your car to a certified public scale. I have never heard of or seen a 70 B body weigh less than 3400 lbs except for a stripped out race car.
I've weighed mine 3 times.

My car was stock, not a thing different when I first weighed it. 3660 lbs. I did a 440 swap and checked it again, 3751. Just last year I weighed it after adding frame connectors, torque boxes, bigger torsion bars, sway bars, etc: 3940.

WEIGH the car yourself. Posting the specs from ads or Wikepedia means nothing. The scale will tell the truth.

KD the simple point I am trying to make is the 340 is no sloutch and the 1970 B-Body is not all that much different from the A’s or E’s.

It is because those numbers are not accurate. They do not include the added weight of options such as A/C, P/S, A/T and any other thing.
You have not responded to my suggestion to actually weigh your car. This is the way to know for sure.... Come on, man!
Yeah, the 340 was a great engine but have you ever rode in a 71 Road Runner with a 340? It surely would be a disappointment against a 383 car. The A and E body cars weighed less, had shorter wheelbases and were better handling cars with their 340s as opposed to the 383 and 440 B body cars.

The problem is, everyone scales their car differently. The two main variables are the accuracy of the scales and the amount of liquids in the vehicle. Throw in any extra baggage, and vehicle weights get inflated pretty quickly. Step away from stock components, and numbers jostle around even more.

KD's right. Those advertised weight specs vary from data point to data point by as much as 100 - 250 lbs.. It's like asking a woman how much she weighs... you never get a true number. Until you plop yer *** on the scales and get a true weight +/_ weight scale accuracy, only then can you backup your opinion with valid data of what YOUR CAR ACTUALY WEIGHS... not some advertised nonsense.

Published shipping weights are utter fantasyland. Most small block a body's weigh around 3400, big block b body's around 3800 up. A small block won't be more than 150 lighter. My best friends 70 340 challenger weighs 3600 plus, my manual brakes, manual steering, no air , bench seat 69 runner weighed almost exactly 3700 , stone stock on a racetrack certified scale. (Big block, 727).
Most people who read shipping weights, then weigh their car are seriously disappointed.
