Anyone use coal slag as blasting media?

Where does one buy non-TSC abrasives where they are readily available like TSC?

I'd like to try out other abrasives besides Black Diamond which for me seems to do good. (Probably since I haven't compared it to other products)

Many thanks
TSC sells garnet and glass bead as well. I saw it on the shelf today.

I used it once at work, don't like it at all. We ran out of silica and grabbed some of it from TSC to finish the job, way slower and didn't leave nearly as nice of a finish.
Yeah was it the fine slag or medium? The fine won’t work well in my opinion.

You can get crushed glass at Northern tool cheap. No health risk as far as I know. It can't be used more than once, so not for blast cabinets. I haven't used it yet, but a co-worker did and he said it did good and didn't clog up his pressure tank like the black slag did.

An episode on America Restoration commented on switching to a slag product and they really liked it.. Much quicker paint/rust removal....

Anything larger than fine will tear up aluminum.
Tooth structure of the metal is a critical component to metal preparation prior to priming coating and or painting. I have never sandblasted aluminum before because its so soft. Does sand cause the same damage?

The only sand available where I live is playground sand, too "soft" to blast with. Someone else will have to answer that, but I suspect it would.

I have used silica sand on aluminum. It will take the scum off but your still going to have to polish.
