Are things really this bad

Actually, some of these folks are far from lazy or young. They scrounge stuff all day long and resell it. I've noticed in town here they use storage units as their warehouse transferring stuff in and out all day on bicycle. Legally scrounged or not? Probably both.
This is why we won't have a rummage sale we desperately need, because my Wife and I don't want to invite that group to come snoop around and get bright ideas.
And I still consider this lazy. They might be busy bodies one day here and there, but they are doing this because they do not want to be required to report to a work shift somewhere. This let's them live off the state handouts and f around at any time they please while honest folks are at work.

and not pay any taxes on their income.

Good thinking. Same here. I hate selling anything and would rather give it all away. We will have ONE sale (with lots of help) when we vacate to the retirement home and that is it.
