Im installing an Auburn pro series 542051 in my '69 roadrunner. I currently have non adjustable axle bearings already installed.

Inside the posi unit itself there is a spacer with a pin in the center of it. It has been mentioned to me that i need to remove this spacer from the posi unit when using non adjustable axle bearings.

I have not tried to dry fit the axles yet to see if they bottom out on this spacer.

If anyone has any auburn posi advise it would be greatly appreciated.

And yes i know this is my first post, in almost two years as a member. Usually i can find the answer i looking for just by browsing the other threads. But im stumped this time.

Those type spacers are used in clutch style suregrip units only and are not in the factory cone style unit.
If installing a new style auburn unit just call them and ask if anything needs to be removed if using it with non adjustable green axle bearings. I would think not since it is similar design wise to the cone style unit.

any truth to having to shorten the right axle a little to use green bearings?

Lewtot my axles are the same length. If one needed to be shortened, i was unaware, and have had no problems at all.

So i called auburn gear, and after two techs had no idea what i was talking about, i was transfered to a senior tech advisor. He said, he believed that the spacer needed to be removed.

Im finding it hard to believe im the first one thats had this question. Im really starting to wish i bought a clutch style posi instead of auburns cone style.

Anyway, i posted a couple pictures of the "spacer" in question. Just in case some has additional imput.

Thanks for all the help so far!!!

I ran an Auburn Pro posi for 1 year in my 8 3/4 dif....I was using Strange axles which have to be custom fit any way, but I would suggest you dry fit the axles to see if they work..

On other piece of advice I'll pass along.....My Auburn unit lasted exactly 40 passes at the drag strip and was then no longer a posi, so I don't think much of them.

Replaced it with a Detroit locker and have had zero problems in 3 years..

This is strictly a street car, i have no intention to drag racing it. Im hoping the auburn hold up under normal driving and burnout conditions. Im sorry if i gave the impression that this was ment for racing.

@Matt ill give cass a call tomorrow. Thanks for the info

If using green bearings, the thrust spacer must be removed.

PS, Cass is a great guy to deal with!

Never ran into that before....

And I'm not a fan at all with the new style replacement Auburn unit. Even with all the hype of how bad the factory unit sucks (mainly because so many think it's not rebuildable), I think the factory (Borg Warner Spin Resistant) unit is way better than the new Auburn unit. Also, it looks like the thrust spacer is held in that Auburn unit with a roll pin? If so, if it were mine, I'd remove it. I do the same with the Power Lock units as they are also held in with a roll pin. In the BW units, the spacer cannot fall out and the unit has to be totally disassembled to get it out but I'll do it just for peace of mind.

I spoke with Cass at doctor diff. And the thrust spacer needs to be removed. He was super helpful. Even emailed him pics and he got back to me within minutes. I'll definitely be giving him business in the future. Might even be sooner reather than later if this auburn unit doesnt hold up.

Thanks to everyone for their help, Rob
