I replaced the 741 with a 489 ... all went well till I put the axels in.. on the adjuster side I had up and down play which was very noticeable (I would guess 40 Thsnds or so) so I had new bearings pressed on and I now have about half that, but still seems like quite a bit of up and down... I am betting it was this way for quite a few years and wonder if I should Ignore and go with it ... or ?

Have you adjusted the end play? Since they are tapered roller bearings, they must be adjust properly FIRST before you measure any bearing play.

Will back adjuster off the 4 notches and see if up/down changes... I was at bearing tight... Thanks

Do you know the correct procedure for axle end play adjustment? Until you do that, you shouldn't be measuring anything.

With the rear end on jack stands take the rear wheels and drums off the car. Take a ball peen hammer and tap the driver's side rear axle IN towards the center of the car. Now, go to the passenger side and pull the passenger side axle OUT as far as it'll go (probably not much). Then, adjust the collar so you have .006-.008" axle end play at the passenger side rear axle. Done deal.
