just got my 440 rebuilt / installed .. it has a backfire through the exhaust ..removed carb and.rebuilt it and still backfires..no vacuum leak.. ran it at night no sparks jumping . I'm looking at pictures of 440's and the advance on the distributor is pointed towards the front of the car more or less.. mine wont run unless the canister is pointed towards the engine ?? I haven't been able to time it yet dont know if its my light but I'm getting an erratic light ...help :angryfire:

anybody ?...take a guess.. I'm ready for anything.. put another base gasket and carb on that I just rebuilt and same result ..and I'm still confused about this distributor position :angryfire:

I dont know enough about the distributor position as im only 19 but my dads 440 had a nasty backfiring problem about a year or two back and we tried everything from changing the timing to adjusting the carb, we ended up installing a new distributor cap and that solved the problem. After we took it off, there was small crack inside which we suspected was the problem. Hope this helps, Mike

yeah ...I've looked at it 10 times but you never know .. my eyes are not as good as they were ..thanks

Pull your distrib. and set your timing marks on the balancer up to TDC. Put your distrib back in lining up your rotor w/ No. 1 on cap and vac.canister in a spot where you can turn it w/out hitting anything.Fire it up and set timing w/ light. If you can't get it to run right w/ around 32 degrees total advance you might have the cam indexed wrong.

thanks 68.. pulled distributor and #1 plug and reset timing ....4 grooves on crank pulley didn't help my earlier attempts..also went back into carb and found the arm that suspends the float was bent near the needle and it was flowing too much fuel no matter how far the seat was lowered.. thanks again that was a weird couple of days
