Bad Back & @ the computer too much

This S U C K S !!
I have been there too, Bud. At 47, I am still in decent health, but my back wigs out sometimes. In 1999 I was making a home movie with car stunts. I made 8 car jumps in 2 different cars. Soon thereafter I started having occasional back trouble. Now with 24 years in wood frame construction, The back trouble is more often. The last time was 2 weeks ago and I'm almost embarrassed to admit what triggered it...I was putting on my pants!
Previously, the Kaiser doc prescribed Prednisone to shrink the inflammed nerves. My benefits lapsed since I'm out of work, so I used the wife's insurance. The different Doc prescribed something different, yet just as effective. I now seem to average 2 episodes per year. Each time it means a week off of work.
Mine is about 2 times a year average also... I messed mine up putting on my damn socks once... Funny how some things will trigger it... Something hits or rubs a nerve or I get a muscle spasm... I'm not 100% sure what it is every time... Or if it is even related to my old injuries or not... I use to abuse my body allot when I was younger, I played allot of football, raced bikes, raced cars, rode quads, collected & split allot of firewood over the years too... Being a carpenter/contractor, did allot of up & down bending, then lifting & carrying heavy materials & stuff, doesn't help either, most my adult life, I'm sure didn't help either...
Yeah it sucks how easy I can trigger a back spasm & how long they can stay with you, it's in my case because nerves being rubbed the wrong way is the explanation I was given... I'm not going to have surgery, if I can ever help it... My Dr. said it's not bad enough yet & supposedly the surgery & scare tissue is more problematic than the injury itself {according to my oldest sister Lori is in medicine, she's not a Dr. anymore, she got tired of all the BS & she's a DVM now, she say animals are allot less bitchy too}.. I know a couple people, one carpenter & one old produce manager, that have had similar back surgery, but that had herniated disc's instead of compressed disc's, to me they seem worse today than before they had surgery, I don't mind a little pain to not be hobbled for the rest of my life... I use to get a shot of some sort of Cortisone/Steroid in my back & shoulder, pretty much every year... I don't get the injections anymore, my insurance won't cover it & supposedly I had been getting too many of them, it will kill your liver too... I'll deal with the occasional discomfort, before I go thru any of that crap any more... Thanks for the kind words everyone...

Buds, do you have a good bed? i bought myself one of those sleep number beds, and 75% of my back problems went away. and i sleep sooooo much better. best damn investment (and yes, some of them beds are an investment but...) i have ever done, and i haven't regretted one minute of it.

Because it's all downhill from your mid-40's, you have to think positive and keep telling yourself that right now you are in the best shape you'll be for the rest of your life. :icon_farao:

Yeah I think like that too, I ain't getting any younger....

Yeah Seally Posture-Pedic Calif. King Size & now also a 3" memory Foam topper on top of that, the Topper really helped, it seems to support all the, previously unsupported voids, while laying down allot better, I don't get the pressure point soreness like with-out the Topper... Should have done it years ago...

I just thought you where naturally ornery, get well soon!

I know were your coming from, hope you feel better soon. finally got my discs fused and have been fine since .Hopefully we will both have a good week in NHRA next week that will make you feel better.

Thanks & Yeah that will make me feel allot better...

Hopefully a little Honey has helped out your situation this weekend. :)

She helped my mental state, she gave me a great deep muscle massage, for about an hour last night, my upper back popped like 4 or 5 times, while she was doing it... It hurt so good...LOL...

Bud, my work has me on my *** in a chair all day. Depending how fast I walk I usually make it between 1.75-2 miles. After a year of doing that, down to 204lbs and that pain in the *** has diminished 95%.

With regards to the stretch's I told you about try this one.

Lay flat on your back with your knees bent up, feet flat on the ground. Cross one leg over the other like you would sitting down. That is to say take you left leg and rest your left ankle just above your right knee. Now while bending your legs back towards your torso (legs still crossed) reach down with both hands and grab a hold of your right leg just below the knee on the shin. Keep your back flat on the ground. Now pull your knee as far in towards your chest as you can. Don't be all herky jerky when you do it. Pull slowly inwards towards your chest and when you get to the point of feeling that muscle stretch keeping pulling it until you can't take the pain of the stretch any longer. Then hold it for about 20-30 secs. Rinse and repeat and do both sides.

Check this link out for pictures of other stretches that will help with that area. Again, stretching is a bandaid. Massage, a bandaid. To really solve the problem... Start walking and it will work itself out.

I need to get up & walk around more, not sit as much, then I seem to be able to stay looser... Thanks for the link... I do allot of that stretching stuff pretty regularly & your right, I do need to start walking allot more too, I do the nightly {well most the time} dog walk with the Lord Budnicks/Buddy around the neighborhood, maybe a half an hr., that's about all he can do @15 y/o, but really I should at-least double the length of time I do it, it will help with getting a few #'s off too, I need to lose 20#'s... I use to ride a bike allot too, not too much anymore, kind of boring to ride all by yourself... I'll try some of those other stretches... Stretching & a weighted club seem to help loosen my back up muscle wise anyway, part of the issue is the Dr. says, I've developed certain muscles from golfing, weight lifting, work related movements, that I need to stay loose, keep them active or they try to pull your spine out of alignment, or to that effect sort of...

when you post make it shorter...LOL you will be there for less time in an uncomfortable postion... lay down and use a PS3 to access the web or xbox.. takes a little longer to type but it works... also stress doesnt help or a tight belt or a wallet in the back pocket. all my backpain and troubles are muscle related. I found over time that certain things will aggravate the condidtion and I avoid them as best as possible but being aware of them helps a lot as well. Standing on concrete for a long time, or uneven ground under your feet. Get comfortable basicaly... when your not comfortable your body is telling you something.. get a better chair to sit at.. I hurt my lower back at age 19 and have been dealing with it ever since.. all muscular luckily though.. skeletal sucks

Thanks for the advice 99ss, unfortunately this new Hot rod PC @ my desk & my land line @ the desk, is my only way to access my customers or the internet e-mail, especially specific programs, sub-contractors contacts, of course our great forums etc.... I don't own & really don't want any handheld devises, I hate cell phones, I-pads or tablets etc., I won't even carry one any more unless I go on a road trip... When I walk away from the office/computer or phone, I feel freedom, if someone needs to get ahold of me, they can come over talk to me in person, or call &/or leave an e-mail or phone message... I really hate the invasion of privacy, that the cell phones & Internet have created, you can't escape it unless you just walk away &/or just turn them off... I do love the great information access & talking about cars thou, that's a good thing... If I had some form of handheld device, I would probably waste, even more damn time posting answers & stupid crap...LOL... It's a soft addiction... Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, depending on how you think... I have to be @ my home office, or by my damn phone & damn computer &/or make myself easily/readily available from 7am-3pm every day... It sucks, I'm an outside person, not really an office person, never really have been either... Except for some week ends, then I teach golf or do club fittings or put on Jr.'s or Ladies golf clinics {well sometimes anyway, when I can get any student}... At-least until my current consultation contract is over {it's a long story}... I try to get up & do something every 15-20 minutes or so, move around for a while... I just waste time between calls & e-mails either here or over @ DC .com, so I don't go stir crazy, waiting... I'm not good with too much idle time on my hands, setting too long, I'm not use to it, at all... I was really use to driving all the time, going from jobsite to jobsite, or traveling all over racing, now I'm home 95% of the time....

LOL that's hilarious, Pops! sheeeit, if they had that option when i got my bed, i def would have opted for it!!!

I hear ya, no cell phone here either. Work from home as well ... the only freedom you have sometimes is to just leave the house.. There are some stretches you can do that help, I'm sure you know how to if you been dealing with this for a long time... Best thing I found is when it starts to hurt.. get up and stretch and walk away for a little bit.. lay down on the floor bring the knees up to the chest one by one.. heating pad sometimes helps.. those muscles are knotting up so you need to relax them.... sucks

Sheeeeeit, I was going to say who snuck in and got a pic of Mars bed? Frickin' hilarious.

Bud, sorry to hear about your back pain. I got in a bicycle wreck in the Oakland hills and did some major muscle muscle damage that lasted months. The first week I was flat on my back and it took 20 mins to get out of bed. Seems every move was wrong. It all eventually cleared up and no permanent damage that I'm aware of (well, maybe my head...haha) so I guess I was lucky. I sure hope you get back (no pun intended) to your chipper self soon.

Dr. 99SS! I sort of figured out a long time ago that a good cure for sore muscles is to work it up to the pain threshold and increasing just a little every day or so. Maybe this is what you are doing, but I can say it sure helps for me. Getting stuck in one position is not good. And from a psychological standpoint I like to just go about my business the best way I can because I'll be back to normal soon. After all 50% of this is half mental :eusa_think:

Doctor advice Joke........My doctor told me that, due to my bad back, I should sit on the toilet to pee. He doesn’t want me to pick up any heavy things.

Yeah too funny, does the dr. think your a woman or something ??, men don't squat to pee & we always pick up stuff too heavy/large....LOL..
