I think it broke during the burn out and came through the block on the way back to the trailer. I also agree with you about not being down the track when it happened. If that would have been the case I would need more than a block plus a few other parts. I guess I got lucky

If I broke one rod can't I just replace that rod and have the crank turned and then have the rotating assembly balanced? Or isn't it that easy?

I did it on the way back to the trailer at the track. The motor started sounding funny after my burn out so I shut it down. Decided to drive it back to the trailer (bad choice). I was driving slow and heard a loud pop so I shut it down.

Lots of stuff to sift through here. What caused the failure? Lack of oil, rod bolt failure, wrong rod bearing clearance, bad oil pan design, fatigue of old parts, weak parts? Thorough disassembly and an account of all failed parts needs to be made. You need to know why it failed so the problem will not reoccur. Seldom have I seen a crank usable after a failed rod. Lets see what you've got first.

if it is race only then, i would pull it apart fix what broke and roll with it.
what rods were u using. i had a set of brooks al rods in motor and didn't realize that al rods need to be un torqued at end of each season. 3 passes till i notices crazy numbers on my oil pressure.
put in trailer and went home. pulled pan and had 4 rods cracked at bolt hole. 1500 for new BME rods 300 for new bearing( 3 sets at 100 to get right clearance) and back in business.
once again pull it apart, clean it up replace whats needed and run the snot out of it.

As far as the bottom end goes it doesn't cost anymore to build a Hemi as it does a 440. (Indy - 572 Rotating Assy. $2725.00. The heads are a little more but not out of sight $1999.00 a pr. Where you get into the cost is the Rockers. By a good set of Stage 5's and your good to go. Rockers, Stands and shafts you're talking $2000.00 - $2500.00. Spend the money on the Rockers it's worth it.
Between the wow factor and the higher resale value it's a good investment.
