Ballpark estimate for the cost to do a 5.7 Hemi swap in a '70 Charger

bah.. i don't hate electric like everyone here.. but F-that :) you know.. you could just rebuild the 383, make it run good and drive the car :)
The 383 was rebuilt less than 200 miles and 3 years ago. I just am not impressed with it. The red car is so much faster....

Heck, even this Dart is faster...

Granted, it has 4.10 gears and weighs 500 lbs less, it is just a mild 360 with the same cam specs as the 383 in the Jigsaw car.

I have not read the whole thread, but if sawing holes that big, go with. 6.4/392 and be done with it.
5.7 is just too mellow. Also good the hear from Durwood. From Pasadena to Oregon! Poor Bastard.

wtf... love that dart btw... that thing screams "Dirt road" :) And i had a 383 68 charger, it was so bland i barely remember it honestly.. how bout heads/cam wake it up and if that doesn't do it then you have the top end to build something really wicked...

Go fast, but not spend much money?

An interesting concept

Been following this thread as I have been contemplating what to build for my Road Runner. Looking at Marketplace there are a ton of gen III hemis and very few big blocks around so it got me thinking... After all the comments the stroker kit in the lonely 383 block I have under the bench seems the way to go and it will look stock.

Who rebuilt the 383 and what cam and what is it degreed at? The cam can make or break the performance of any engine especially if it's not degreed in.....I like to 'advance' a smaller cam to get the engine more happy down low. Smaller cams is anything .500 lift or less and will even advance a cam that's bigger if I don't like the specs of it.....

If you get bored look up mopar joe on youtube. he builds a lot of stroked big blocks and takes em to the track.. a lot of decent info.

A 400 block will respond better than a 383 will. Imo, keep the 383 stock stroke but use a better rod and lighter piston and spool more rpm. It will surprise you. The 400 block has a bigger bore than a 440 it will also surprise you. It'll produce more low end torque and will still move well on the top.....just don't spool it as high as a short stroke engine unless you want to spend really big bucks and even then, it might not want it.

the 400 i believe is .090 bigger bore than a 383 and looking at 440 sources kits they have a 500 inch kit for the 400 that uses a 4.125 stroke instead of 4.250.. be happy spinning along with that.. (i worry too much bout blowing stuff up) Or.. they make i think a 451 for the 383 with a shorter stroke than the 383>496

OR... Kern is in cali and owns 2 chargers... so he is obviously rich..... Aluminum Hemi time... (just don't go Indy)

Depends on how much work you do yourself, what kind of deal on the engine/trans, etc.
My 5.7 Hemi swap is best thing I could have done to this car! With the NAG1 5 speed auto, it cruises to 18-20 mpg on E85 and makes over 330rwhp and 390rwtq!
I got my entire drivetrain for $1,250 out of a wrecked 2006 Daytona.
I should have gone straight to the Holley terminator-x computer system that I have now and saved about $2k.
I also should have gone straight to the PCS2600 controller for the transmission that I also have now and saved headache and money! PCS – Sound German Automotive

Get TTI headers, they fit great.
Good luck!
Ryan

Put a turbo on the 383.
We do all this dicking around with heads and cams and strokers.
Guys are slapping turbos on junk and they make so much power they can’t keep them on the track.
Anyone been to test and tune night lately?

Man, I've forgotten all the numbers......but a 400 block and 440 crank makes 451 iirc. That's also a good combo. Don't know about the 383 combos since the bore is smaller as I like big bore engines.

Looking at 440 Source its a 438 with a 440 stroke crank in a 383. 451 with the 400 block. Anyone got a cheap 400 standard bore block? LOL. I would prefer to stay with something that likes to rev.

you can find a 400 for 300-400 at least in my area.. not much cheaper...

I shouldn't have looked at that blower kit.. the whole way home my brain is like "A blower isn't much more than a stroker kit.... bolts right on...." I have wanted a blower since i was like 9.. :) 5500 for that kit.. then adapters/carbs and ****.. 1500 moreish.. no hood.. but my hood is just extra weight anyway :)
