Ever wonder what the music world would have been, if the Beatles didn't land 50 yrs ago today

Not really but I sure like their music. Same can be said of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Rivers, Smokey Robinson and Motown and other artists who influenced them and the rest of pop music culture though.

I love the Beatles. Listening today, you can see how some of their music is very dated, but when you compare what was on the radio in 64, you can see how they had a much different style and how they evolved over the years which made them trend setters. It's a shame that they imploded because they probably could have had another 5 good years.

For a 50 year old song, this still sounds fresh to me....

I started learning Beatles music when they first hit U.S. radio, and I've been playing it ever since. I'm not crazy about all of their songs but they produced an amazing amount of music in a very short time. There's very few people around that don't have a couple dozen Beatle songs rolling around in their heads.

Sorry tallhair, but unless I'm reading what you wrote wrong, you have it backwards, Pet Sounds was a big influence on Sgt. Pepper's, not the other way around. Pet Sounds was released in May of '66, Pepper's was released in June of '67.

"The other thing that really made me sit up and take notice was the bass lines on Pet Sounds. If you were in the key of C, you would normally use---the root note would be, like, a C on the bass (demonstrates vocally). You'd always be on the C. I'd done a little bit of work, like on 'Michelle,' where you don't use the obvious bass line. And you just get a completely different effect if you play a G when the band is playing in C. There's a kind of tension created.

"I don't really understand how it happens musically, because I'm not very technical musically. But something special happens. And I noticed that throughout that Brian would be using notes that weren't the obvious notes to use. As I say, 'the G if you're in C---that kind of thing. And also putting melodies in the bass line. That I think was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper, it set me off on a period I had then for a couple of years of nearly always writing quite melodic bass lines."

That said, Brian Wilson was influenced by the Beatles' Revolver and Rubber Soul and that's what pushed him to start going beyond his cars, girls and surf songs to come up with Pet Sounds.

They are great... I wasn't into all the John Lennon political stuff... I liked them up-to the psychedelic drug induced era, Maharasha crap... Just not my tastes... My oldest sister Lori loved them, I got really sick of hearing them over & over again... It's nostalgic to hear them today, I like it much better now, then I did in the 70's... Their 1st & The White album were my personal favorites... IMHO the drugs influences screwed up Brian Wilson's {Beach Boys fame} music, nearly turned him into a veg., he wouldn't tour anymore, wouldn't hardly leave his room or the recording studio, he's just recently started going out in public again, a few years ago... Yoko Ono was the death of the group allegedly... Still good music none the less... my $0.02 cents

Yoko Ono was the death of the group allegedly...

The Beatles was Lennon's band & by the time they broke up, Paul was clearly the leader, which really went up John's ***. There were a number of factors and presures that lead to their breakup and I think Lennon started to want out shortly after Brian Epstein died, but I think that Yoko was the final nail in the Beatles coffin. I guess you could say that they went out on top before they "jumped the shark".

I watched the tribute show last night! it was very good. Great to see and hear Paul and Ringo together and singing! Shame George and John weren't with them! Like their music more now than back when! being nostalgic I guess! It did bring back some good memories from when I was a teen. It also had some interesting history about them and how they came together.Also what inspired Paul to write the song Mother Mary His mother was the inspiration!

Saw the special on CBS last night and I thought most of it was pretty good. Interesting to hear from some of the guys that worked on the Ed Sullivan show back in '64. Too bad the didn't have a reunion while John and George were still around.

Even tho I liked the Beatles, I also like a lot of other stuff that was out back then like the 13th Floor Elevators.....Bloodrock too.
