big problume???

ok so i was on a couple sites yesterday that would read vins off a older car....so after the vin for my 76 was put it it cam up as a 66 newport with a 440 buth this car is a 76....so i was like their site must not be working...checke out 4 more sites and they all say 66.....could there be 1 vin for 2 cars or was a screwed...like the car is registerd and the paper/car match up


is there a change this could happen randomly or is this car smokin hot(in more ways then 1)?

+1 check your title and compare, It may be that somewhere down the road the vin tag was swapped. How long have you had the car?

Well....my white book shows CL as being
66 only Newport
67-71 Newport Custom
72 only Newport Royal
73-74 Newport

CM as
72-74 Newport Custom

and then it stops.

I think it's probably fine. It's just the website decoder can't deal with the fact it has a "duplicate" character for a year designation. I think it was the 80's when they started changing the numbers and used "alpha" characters for the year.

sweet ....so its all good then .......now how can u tell if it has a 400 or a 440 by looking at the engine alone.....i know there are casting numbers but i can see em .........and what dose the R on the side of the block mean (driverside on the front)

you can tell by looking for a flat square pad on the drivers side of the engine, straight across from the distributor that has stampings on it. if there is no pad there (below the valley pan hold down btw), then it isnt a 440.

If you can, post a pic of the motor, looking straight down and focus between the front of the intake and the water pump housing. We'll tell you if it's a 400 or a 440 and point out where to look
