After the block casting number is a -3. What does that stand for. I always thought it was revisions to the mold yet I hear someone else said it's the pours out of the same ladle at the foundry. (I doubt)

I would guess mold number for running multiple lines or swapping out on the fly in order to track potential quality issues.

Nope. I have seen numbers in the teens on blocks and if I remember, they were towards the end of their production life. Like a 72 or 73 340 block.

That is which pattern was used. If they have a problem with a block they have to know which pattern is causing the problem.

The castings wear out, too. When they make another, they also bump the number.

rickseeman is right. It would technically be a pattern number. The actual molds are made by packing sand with a binder around the patterns.
