is there a guide for the proper finishes on suspension and drivetrain fasteners?

Probably. I just make my stuff pretty to my tastes.

I think most suspension hardware were black or grey phosphate coated. There could have been some zinc yellow, and zinc clear (silver) on some things like the nuts on rubber stop bumpers, etc.. Many hours on the internet looking at pictures, but as MMissle said, do whatever you like; it's your car.

We use a tumbler. You'd be surprised how it cleans up nuts & bolts and it doesn't harm the threads or the finish. It's not fast but it does a great job.

those harbor freight tumblers are junk/waste of money
they eat belts for dinner and the barrels wear out fast
so after a while, all they will do is slip if you put any more then 2 bolts inside them at a time
i have a thumler's tumbler
its well worth the money..

Nothing at Harbor Freight is quality but we have had ours for about 10 years and have only replaced one belt. I guess we're lucky. What surprised me is that they had a replacement belt.

the manuals from mmc detriot are worth the money. just bought a set, love them
