Bought tires from Summit and got this

When I had my tire shop, that I've used for 39 years now, dismount my old Polyglas tires I bought in February 1990.... the owners told me they'd trust the 35 year old tires we took off more than the new Polyglas I'd just bought! That comfy feeling sets in....

I don't know if it's still true, but I've been told that the reproduction Polyglass tires are made exactly as they were originally. That information is over 10 years old, when I talked with Kelsey Tire.

I'm sure they are, it's more true rubber content that is todays issue with tires.

Good Nylon scrub brush and a can of powdered Comet will take that blue overspray off and they'll look fine.

If not send them back.

Tom
Easier with Spray Nine. Spray it on, wait a few seconds, then nylon scrub brush will reveal the whitest
it's ever going to be.
That stuff is amazing on whitewalls/white letters....does fantastic on about anything else for that matter.

While that is terrible, it is not common. Bad news travels faster than good so your story gets mentioned before the 50 other guys with 10 year old tires and no failures.

Wanted to go with a different brand tire other than BFG Radial TA so bought tires from Summit.
I would send them back. When I purchased my Charger they had BFG Radial TA‘a that were old then, they’re going on 14 years now. I don’t drive the car, just sitting they look brand new.

I won't wear the tires out. The tires Im replacing are about 13 years old and have 2500 miles. BFG/TA's. Fronts still look new; not so much for the rears.
I'm going to return these to Summit.

True. It was a just for instance photo and story.

One thing to keep in mind is some places won't service a tire older than 5 years. That means no flat repair or tire rotation. We bought a set of tires from Discount for my wife's car that were 3 years old. We didn't realize it until it went to the dealer for service 2 years later and they wouldn't rotate them. Discount did take them back and said it never should've happened.

Years ago Goodyear prorated a set of tires on my 06 Charger that dry rotted on me. I forget how old they actually were but when I showed the tire shop I use the three year old receipt from the stealership that installed them, they went to bat for me and got the discount. That’s when I first learned to ask about the age of what they are putting on.

What's the oldest date code on a new tires you guys would accept? I'm curious because i ordered a set of tires yesterday from an online retailer. If they're too old i'll send them back but how old is too old?
Within 6 months is my criteria. I look at it like this: Tire shops around here won't touch your tires if they are 8 years old or more. So if someone wants to sell me a 1 year old tire, I want a 12.5% discount. No takers yet. It's easier for them to find me a newer tire.

Used to buy from Tirecrawler in Downey, California. Office Hottie would go out to rack to confirm dates on actual tires purchased. Out of business now. Dates are overated.
Not if the date means you can't get the tire serviced while out on the road. Discount tire around her won't touch it if it's a day over 5 years.
Dates are overated. On bias ply tires i will agree, but on radials anything over 7 years old will blow, even sitting still with less than 100 miles on them. The biggest failures I have had were BF Goodrich. The only radials i have had good luck with on age is Cooper tires.View attachment 1832287
The two rears are blown, less than 50 miles, but we're about 10 years old when the blew. Exactly where it sits.
Never had a bias ply come apart but have had lots of radial tires well over that did fine. Heard lots of people talk about BFG's blowing up just sitting. Makes me wonder where they were made as I've had nothing but good results with USA made BFG's over the years. Also had great results with Michelins. General Tires on the other hand....I'll never own another tire with that name on it.

Had a 4 year old General Tire mess up the rear fender on my Dakota. Can't believe it didn't do more damage since I was doing 60 but General Tire paid for it!

I used to do a lot of business with a company called Big-O. Pretty popular tire dealer here in Tucson 30 years ago or so. I used them for their life of tire warranty. Don't remember the specifics of the warranty but basically if any Big-O brand tire fails for any reason you get a new one. Had Big-O's on the GTX back in about 92-93 or so and one failed. Just took the wheel/tire off and got new tires. Well, 5 or 6 years later I needed a tire for something so I took the old tire to Big-O and they gave me a new one. Mounted and balanced to boot. BTW, this tire was on another car and sat flat for a few years. It was worthless but they honored the warranty.

Way too expensive to have to "settle" for questionable product. Send them back. IMO

I spoke with Summit rep before purchase and she told me they rotate out their tires every 90 days - so I bought 2 rear tires in 275/60/15
One tire was manufactured in Nov 22 and the other March 23
Also when looking at where blue dye is on sidewall it looks like sidewall is beginning to crack
So, do these tires have premature sidewall cracking or is this normal?
Summit said they will take tires back
Your thoughts?

The blue coating is applied only to protect the white lettering during shipping and storage, is sprayed on and dries to a waxy hard coating until washed off with a scrub brush and plain water, a but a mild soapy solution would speed up the cleaning process a little bit. There is NO cracking on your tire sidewall, it’s just the rubber flexing under the blue coating causing that cracked appearance on the coating ONLY.

As for the date codes, you are ok except I’d be cheezed off on the November 2022 tire. March 2023 is okay. Generally if a tire has a date code of up to a year or 14-15 months old by the time you get them you can just diarize about a 6-7 year service life from the time they were actually installed and driven on the first time. Even if you sent the tires back to summit you’d likely get the same date codes when re-buying them from anyone in your area. Summit (or other retailer) will just pull their tires from a central facility. The warehouse likely won’t have any newer date codes on that model either, they are selling last years product first before the new order arrives etc…. It’s a big revolving door that way.. even though it is now 2025, the next batch of tires with have a lot 2024 date codes in it, maybe some of the very last ones to be received by the main warehouse will possess 2025 date code but I doubt it.

The ONLY concern I have with those two tires you have shown is if you want to mount them white letter out. The one tire has black on the white letters from rubbing and abrading against others during shipping and handling. It has rubbed through the blue protective coating and has put black rubber onto the raised white portion and that is a PITA to get off.

I’ve run both bfg and cooper, and prefer the cooper. To me they are a little Quiter, not as hard, less money, and the white letters don’t yellow/brown over time like the bfg’s.

Someone else mentioned earlier, and they are correct that the MT sportsman tread and cobra gt tread is near the same. Yes they are owned by the same company and are essentially the same tire, but the MT’s are way more money. The cobra gt’s are the obvious choice when comparing the two...
