Broke my 7UP Pop Machine today....

Both headlight buckets out.
superbirdfullpaint1 083.jpg

My god how did we get here...
superbirdfullpaint1 084.jpg

Lots of old dings in her and no doubt some mud. All to be discovered starting tomorrow when the sanders come out.
superbirdfullpaint1 085.jpg

Headlight buckets home to rebuilt. Fortunately I bought the special extremely thin head bucket bolts and pivot bushings some 19 years ago for $32.45 !
superbirdfullpaint1 087.jpg

Back bumper.
superbirdfullpaint1 089.jpg

Passenger door glass and door "cards', as well as the stainless door card trim and the nose bumper.
superbirdfullpaint1 090.jpg

Tail light housings and lenses, shop has the bezels for paint.

She's really snowballing now, you are going to be glad you went this far when all is said and done. :popcorn2:

Holy Ballllzzzzzz its really getting good now. Gotta love when it just slowly creeps into a **** show. That's how she gets done right. That is how my Runner started with a dissassembly and repaint which then turned into new bumpers, gaskets, wiring, etc..... Car looks good so far man keep it up!

Not what I'm supposed to be doing, but here I am cleaning up my "clean area" and adding a table to lay out car parts.
superbirdfullpaint2 002.jpg

I won't even state the value in this picture.
superbirdfullpaint2 003.jpg

All this needs to be restored or cleaned up.
superbirdfullpaint2 004.jpg

Most of the pile now in play, including some window trim for polishing.
superbirdfullpaint2 006.jpg

About says it all..
superbirdfullpaint2 009.jpg

If ANYONE has a source for this material, please... please! ... let me know! Thankfully mine is mint!
superbirdfullpaint2 010.jpg

Nose seals, trunk seal and a door seal.

Not exact but maybe they have something closer.
What size are the hexagons ?

Vacuum headlight actuator on the drivers side with a correct clevis pin and retainer clip.
superbirdfullpaint2 027.jpg

Passenger side with a long cotter pin through it and bent over.
superbirdfullpaint2 028.jpg

End plate off and headlight assembly out.
superbirdfullpaint2 037.jpg

Vacuum actuator clevis pin and clip.. correct.
superbirdfullpaint2 041.jpg

What are the chances. I take the cotter pin out of the passenger side, flip the bucket around a few times and the correct clevis pin falls out on the bench. Been rolling around for 35+ years in there..
superbirdfullpaint2 046.jpg

Both headlight assemblies out, bulb retainers and bulbs removed.
superbirdfullpaint2 048.jpg

Headlight "buckets" removed from drivers side.
superbirdfullpaint2 049.jpg

Decals coming off the headlight doors. Heat from BEHIND is the key, not ON the decals.
superbirdfullpaint2 062.jpg

Beaten up headlight stops need to be removed and new ones made.
superbirdfullpaint2 069.jpg

Decal coming off the drivers side door.
superbirdfullpaint2 076.jpg

superbirdfullpaint2 077.jpg

Progress.
superbirdfullpaint2 079.jpg

Found that the drivers side door was cracked after removing the decal.
superbirdfullpaint2 086.jpg

Ground the crack with a spherical ball, as well as some groves for reinforcement.
superbirdfullpaint2 088.jpg

Cut some old rivet mandrels to fit the groves.
superbirdfullpaint2 090.jpg

Weapon of choice.
superbirdfullpaint2 092.jpg

JB mixed and coated over the crack and rivet mandrels.
superbirdfullpaint2 095.jpg

Worn out and damaged headlight stop drilled off.
superbirdfullpaint2 098.jpg

Vacuum actuators tested to make sure they are leak free and to clean the bellows while we're here.
superbirdfullpaint2 111.jpg

Fully extended ready to clean.

Dollying out 53 years of damage and wows.
superbirdfullpaint2 119.jpg

Making some new headlight stops from some sheet steel.
superbirdfullpaint2 125.jpg

New stops being riveted into place
superbirdfullpaint2 129.jpg

Always use a washer as back up on fiberglass/plastic items.
superbirdfullpaint2 131.jpg

Pull out the air over hydraulic rivet gun.
superbirdfullpaint2 132.jpg

Looks good.
superbirdfullpaint2 135.jpg

Ready to drop back at the paint shop for prep and paint.

Is the honeycomb material for the nose aluminum or steel? I bought some aluminum with a hex pattern like that online, it was advertised as material for custom grille inserts. I formed it over a buck to make some one of a kind speaker grilles.

Steel

Toluene to remove the decal glue from the headlight doors. Soak a sock, lay it in place for a few minutes and then wipe.
superbirdfullpaint2 146.jpg

Cleaned up nice, crack fixed on the back side and I'll let my body and paint man deal with the front side with compatible products to his primer and paint.
superbirdfullpaint2 148.jpg

Said for years that I'd never restore this car... ffs. Scrubbing bubbles to clean up the wiring harness after a full examination of wires and terminals.
superbirdfullpaint2 155.jpg

Soaking and then wiped down after a full inspection.
superbirdfullpaint2 159.jpg

Re-wrapping the wiring with electrical tape.
superbirdfullpaint2 162.jpg

Wiring harness ready for reinstallation.
superbirdfullpaint2 176.jpg

Headlight door vacuum lines up next for clean up. Scrubbing bubbles and some green scotchbrite.
superbirdfullpaint2 167.jpg

Details on the vacuum hose. Two groves on this side, one hump.
superbirdfullpaint2 169.jpg

Same hose 180* rotation has 4 groves/three humps.
superbirdfullpaint2 172.jpg

Vacuum hoses all cleaned up ready to reinstall.

Purolator truck showed up with stuff from National Moparts. New door sill plates, trunk weather seal, some 1/4-20 captive washer nuts and a new radio antenna. Amazing that Nigel had stock on the antenna, as nobody else does as tried to order from Jamie at Megaparts and he "hoped" within a month...
superbirdfullpaint2 178.jpg

Nuts dipped in Boeshield T9
superbirdfullpaint2 181.jpg

Signal light housings and mounting brackets up next.
superbirdfullpaint2 189.jpg

Not something you can even see, but time to clean this overspray off of them.
superbirdfullpaint2 191.jpg

Coming apart.
superbirdfullpaint2 195.jpg

3403097 drivers side housing.
superbirdfullpaint2 197.jpg

3403096 passenger side housing. Most interesting thing is the stamping "font" is different on the two housings, yet the same mfg # stamp!
superbirdfullpaint2 198.jpg

Both housings out of the mounting brackets.
superbirdfullpaint2 200.jpg

Did the first one with Easy Off Oven cleaner and then the can clogged. Second with paint stripper.
superbirdfullpaint2 218.jpg

As the layers disappeared in order it was neat to see that these assemblies were in the nose when it was originally painted in 1969. I'm just simply amazed at the like new condition of the wiring sockets.

On the railroad, we had more than one set of stamps in the tool room. Likely was the case here too.

Yep. Just gave me a giggle considering how bent out of shape the "experts" get about correct stamping fonts when about anything can go.

Just what you want to find, clean bare metal!
superbirdfullpaint2 232.jpg

Dan's been stripping and looking good so far. The car that is...
superbirdfullpaint2 234.jpg

Started into the quarter and looking good. We know it will need a patch welded in down below the marker light like the other side did
superbirdfullpaint2 235.jpg

I've wanted to dig into this lump for 33 years. It's always been there and never got worse. It's the factory seam lead that lifted from the old flux below.
superbirdfullpaint2 242.jpg

Solid as a rock but will need to be melted out and fixed.
superbirdfullpaint2 241.jpg

A long way to go, but we'll finally get the crooked Plymouth decal corrected!

Did the lead seam lift, or had it never been properly shaped from the factory?
