Ran across a bare 72 340 block. Engine had tossed a rod, there is a small divit missing out of the bottom of the vacated cylinder( well below where the rings travel) There is also about a two inch section broken out of the bottom of the block ( under the corresponding cylinder), of the surface where the oil pan flange is. The broken piece is there. I'm sure it could be professionally repaired. I was going to offer $50 to make an end table out of it. This worth saving, or is it best off as a table?

I’d jump on it.. it’s worth whatever you think you can afford. I had one I had sleeved for a friend and that cost about 300$ several years ago... I wouldn’t scrap it by no means.

I'm reasonably assured that your wife or signigicant other, would ABSOLUTELY (NOT) want to have a greasy, smelly 300 pound engine block in the living room with a lamp on it. Set it out for the trash man.....just my opinion of course...

I'd save it if you have use for it. It's totally fixable and usable. If not, then maybe tell some small block people here where to find it?

A rare 72 block? Nope. There were no rare ones in 72. Here's a table base I found. Suit yourself.

My friend in VA who was a racer always welded blocks and heads.
He sold the good stuff and ran the "junk".
His name? Dave Lewis, Big Red.

I have thrown away blocks with less damage than that. I sure wished I had kept some, easily fixable today, and worth it.

Did it get into water?

Buy it for scrap iron weight price, mag it for cracks before putting ANY more money into repairs. Maybe also a pressure test.
If it's cracked, scrap it, if not, find out how much a repair would cost, first.
