Hello All,

I've decoded my fender tag through "stockmopar.com" and have a question. My build date code is "803" (second line from bottom on right side) which translates to Aug 3, no problem there, but Stock Mopar identifies this as a build date of Aug 3 1972 and not Aug 3 1973. The code right below this one signifies the engine size, model year and assembly plant (P3G), which translates to 400 1973 St. Louis. I'm not disagreeing but just need to confirm that the build date is in fact 1972 and not 1973 as the Factory Parts Manual for certain parts offers 2 numbers depending on the date i.e. "up to 3-15-1973" & "after 3-15-1973".

Thanks in advance.

Correct, they started building 73 model cars in August of 72. That’s a really early build. Details on your car?

Thanks for clarifying.
1973 Roadrunner, factory options - 400 4 spd, 3.55's, ps, pb, ac, bench seat. 400 is long gone, replaced with 512 stroker, just south of 700hp, 600 tq. Pics are before the car went into the body shop. Seeing if I can make my power bulge hood work, if not, thinking of six pack hood scoop.

I've seen a 68 Fury in a junkyard with approximately the same build date. Early Aug '67. Do you have a very low vin sequence number?

It's 1973.
As we get into the 70's, the scheduled starting dates (SPDs) of the model years creep forward from August first and go longer into August of the next calendar year than cars built in the 60's. It appears the earliest 1973 model built at the St. Louis plant start with an SPD of 808 1972. Cars in the VIN range of 3G266*** have an 803 1973 SPD. Toward the end of the model year a lot of cars tend to have the same SPD. It's possible you have as VIN of 3G269875 with an 803 SPD.

Is the door sticker showing the actual build date still there? Here's the door sticker for the car I posted. Notice DATE OF MANUFACTURE was 8-73; August 1973 for a 1973 model year car. Also, the MDH shows 080717 or August 7th, not August 3rd as shown on the tag. Further reinforcing cars are NOT, necessarily, built on their SCHEDULED dates.

Unfortunately, everything on the door sticker is faded or non existent, meaning all spots are blank so I can’t confirm this way. With all due respect, how sure are you that it’s Aug 73 and not Aug 72? And please don’t worry, it’s not crucial that I must know but it sure would be nice.

Thanks for your help on this.

@69Coronetrt is a walking encyclopedia on old Mopars, and has been researching and collecting details on these types of things for many years. I would trust his advice 100%.

We’ll then, that’s good enough for me

Thanks for everyone’s input, very much appreciated.

The tag and door sticker are for the same car. The door sticker tells us the car was built at the St. Louis plant, its VIN (3G266498) and that it was built in August 1973. So if your VIN is similar, it too was built in August of 1973. To be built in August of 72, the VIN would have to be in the 100001~110000 range.

Thank you for the kind words and I try to help when I can but I have a lot left to learn.

Nicely optioned car.

I'd love to have a factory 4 speed with AC car.
