Hello guys...

today I wanted to change my Cam /lifters... so I removed all the parts. But I think there will be a problem with the pushrods... the lenght is @ 9.31 inch ( that should be OEM .... as fas as I know ) but the Ground Circle of the old and the new cam is Different.. "OLD CAM : 1.27inches " New Cam 1.33 inches "
I don´t know what type /kind of old cam I have... I found some numbers on the rear side of the cam 222230 (the 3 could perhaps also be a 8 ) and on front there are two numbers 1103 and J 13 and there was some purple paint on the cam...

The "New Cam " is a 2192 EDE so that should be o.k. The question is, will the new cam work with the pushrods I have ? Normaly it should work, because EDELBROCK says that I have to use the "old" pushrods...

Perhaps someone can help me ?

Greetings Juergen

P.S perhaps I am thinking in the wrong way...but if the pushrods are the right ones...than the "Old Cam " couldn´t work properly.... i.e the valves would not open fully ...correct ? Because of the smaler ground circle...
and also the smaler lift....

The stock OE length is fine. The lobes are taller because there is more lift.

@ 69bee so the EDE cam has more lift ? Will the valves have enough clearance to the pistons then..?

@all does someone know... what kind of cam is my " old one"... Brand ?

Thank you#

...Purple cam ? because of the paint on the cam ? If it is a "purple cam"... what are the numbers mean ? 222230 1103 J 13

The purple paint kinda gives it away. Im curious as to which one. Need to measure the lift

Oh, dang it, being pretty color blind, i guess i'll never be able to tell lol. Dang it.

lift on an edelbrock performer #2192 is .420" intake and .442" on the exhaust. a stock magnum cam is .447" on the intake and .465" on the exhaust. the purple cam may be anywhere from .450"-.500+". you need to measure the lobe on the purple cam to know for sure. mopar hydraulic tappets have a lot of plunger travel, about .210". so usually there is a lot of preload on the tappet when using stamped rocker arms. checking the tappet preload on the purple cam will give you an idea of what tappet preload will be on the edelbrock cam when using the same push rods and rockers.

Measure the base circle of the cam with a micrometer, say its .600" . Then measure the entire lobe height from base circle to top of lobe. Lets say that was .900". Deduct .600 from .900, and you get .300. That is the lift at lobe. Multiply this by the rocker arm ratio, say 1.5 equals .450" . This is the lift at valve. Or total lift. Determining duration is a bit more complicated, and is another story, but can be determined with a few tools. And yes that IS a purple shaft cam. I have one in my car. Mine has .509 lift at valve, 292 degrees total duration, 242 @ .050 lift. There are several different grinds of the purple shaft cam. Good luck.

The stock push rods should work, I shimmed my rocker shafts to move the plunger up to near the top of its travel in the lifter, as I feel it works better this way. Plus I have the heads milled a little which lowers the lifter plunger.

...Purple cam ? because of the paint on the cam ? If it is a "purple cam"... ...

"Purple Cam" = MOPAR Performance cam, as in Direct Connection Purple Shaft series of camshafts. It is/was a line of performance camshafts from ma Mopar from back in the late 60s to the present. They were identified by the purple paint between the lobes.

Glad to see you're getting your hands dirty!

I'm thinking you are running the stamped steel rockers. To get the push rod length correct you need a dry lifter and a checking pushrod. With the lifter on the base circle you measure the total lifter plunger travel and select the push rod to be about in the middle of the travel. For perf applications I use the adjustable rockers and set the adjuster one full turn from zero lash. This is after I figured out the proper push rod length for the adjustables. If your car was working before it should probably work again with the same push rods.

Thank you all for your answers... I will check the preload first.. and if this is o.k. I will install the new "EDE " cam... I was always wondering, why there wasn´t much "torque" at the low end.... now I know - because of the performance cam.

Hope "it will work fine " today....

Greetings Juergen

it's possible that the edelbrock cam may take you too far "in the other direction". that cam has about 260 degrees of intake seat timing, ground on 112lsa, 5 degrees of advance ground into the cam. intake valve should close around 57 degrees ABDC. with stock 10:1 pistons it may make too much cylinder pressure for pump gas. with 8:1 pistons it's probably ok. that short cam doesn't need 5 degrees of advance with a 440, maybe with a low compression 361 or 383 it would be ok.

...the cam is in the engine now.... tomorrow I will make the Break In ( I will keep my fingers crossed , that everything works fine

Here are some pics from my todays "work"

@ lewtot 184 I called the Summit Tec Dep. and gave them the Setup from my car.... 440 cui @ 10:1 CR Edelbrock Performer Intake 650 AVS EDE Carb HP Manifolds ,Stock Converter, 3.23 Rear ... weight of the car @ 3800lbs

The "Summit Man " said, that the 2192 EDE cam would work good in this car....... I will keep you informed...about the result

as long as you have good gas you should be fine. the power brakes should work better.

..made the Break In today.... first I had to "fight" with the Ignition... so I needed 4 trys to start the engine,,, (Hope I didn´t destroy the cam...) then when the engine started, I reved her up to 2100-2400 rpm...for about30 minutes... oil pressure was fine @ 60psi ( with 10w30 oil... watertemp. was also o.k. @ 185°F ..... after the break in , I drove around the block.... MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE !
The Car pulls like a Truck.... When I accelerate wwhile driving 25-30 mls.... the wheels are spinning.. WOW

After the little "Joyride" I drove back and put the car on the lift for an oil / filter change... ( I wll use Royal Purple 5w30 HPS )

Greetings Juergen

BTW.... I need to change theoil pan gasket also.... can I remove the oilpan with the engine still in the car /engine bay ??

drove 50 mls last saturday after I changed the oilpan gaskets also... the car runs fine ! oil pressure even with the 5W30 oil ist good

Now it will be time for the next "project".... ( New carpet.... and subframe connectors .. )

I also gave the oil pan ..some paint and added a torque strap from" Schumacher"

Greetings Juergen
