Can you put lights inside the side markers 1969 Coronet

about the original question... sure you can having the skills and tools. Drilling holes on housing for sockets for regular bulbs or led strip down the lense ? is about prefference. Wiring? just need to splice the power from parking light sockets in front and tail lights on rear. No need for any extra harness, can be simply home made . No need for 68 or 70 harness donor to make that just 4 wire splice job or 8 if not chassis grounding the sidemarker light.

This has been done and asked several times in the past. Is pretty much a straight up job.

Getting a 70 sidemarker setup could be an option? maybe but would require body job I guess. I think they are a bit larger

Why these ? I can get the rest, but not the specific reason for these aside just easier acces from the driver position... but safety? I don't get a safer disposition but just comfort.
Can't comment about Washington's reasoning..
The ignition switch moved to the column was due to the high car theft rate, previously the ignition switch and wiring were mounted on the lower side of the dash and was easily jumped/bypassed being in the column protected it....

Just my $0.02...

I don't think the government mandated having the ignition switch in the column, rather they said that the key had to have an interlock to prevent removal with the selector out of 'park' position, or reverse in manual, and this was the easiest way to implement it. Modern cars use electronic solenoids to accomplish the same thing, hence push button starts and keyless ignition that you see these days. And for some reason, I rarely see the flasher button on the column these days either.

I added led's to mine. But not on the car yet. Purchased 4 reflectors at advance auto parts for $10 two red /two
Amber in the pack. They are the correct height but a little short on length which gives you room to put led's on each end they light up nice! I have electrical tape on it now. But will cover the led ends with urethane caulk to be more permanent.

Wires leave the column and plug is exposed on them anyway, so can be jumped too. But the column block feature sounds more credible. I don't think this due federal regulations thought. Some european cars got the ign switch still on dash up to the 80s and they were marketed into the USA without this related mod, like bumpers, turning/parking lights, or round headlights mods made on them to allow being marketed in USA

50 years later..
Who can say what their motivation was but in the 60s/70s USA car thefts were on the increase and the US Congress started to step in and it continues even today. Another example was the mandate the 70 Plymouth SuperBird couldn't be sold in certain state due to no front bumper and wouldn't meet the 5 MPH no damage mandate. Regarding the Euro cars, in the mid 80s the rules for importing Euro cars into North America changed significantly due to the tighter emmission standards...
