so if I turn the key the car will start, but if I don't hold it in the start position it dies

It is a 383 with mopar electronic ignition. I replaced the

ignition switch, tumbler and keys, distributor, wires, plugs, ballast resistor

Did I do something wrong? Maybe picked up the wires off the wrong side of the ballast resistor when I did the ignition upgrade?

bad ballast resistor is all im commin up with, even tho you put on a new one ....dont mean its a good one...try that first.

With the key in the "run" position check for +12v at the ballast. My guess is that you won't find any voltage.

Next check for continuity from the ignition switch "run" wire to the ballast. If that checks good the the switch itself is not making a proper contact or a bad connection through the firewall.

They should include a 4 post ballast resistor with the electronic ignition kits. simple wiring faux pas on my part. Haven't done one in 25 years. She started right up and runs like a champ. time to flush the radiator, change the thermostat, flush the gas tank (running off a gas can)

Then it's brakes, flush all the other fluids, and DRIVE for a bit

Probably the "hot" wire to the ballast from the switch. Jump from the steering junction connector to the ballast and see if the problem is cured.

First, jump the + side of the coil to the + battery post. Start the car. Work your way back from there. Ballast resistor, ignition switch, wiring, etc.
