Carb size????

Hey guys I'm building a 440 and had a ? About how big of a car is needed .

So fairly str8 forward build
Eld rpm top end intake cam alm heads 84cc I'm thinking of a 440 source lower end to get compression to 10.1
Comp roller rockers 1.5

I'm told I need a 850 CFM minimum
I have a brand new 750 CFM carb sitting here will it work or do I need bigger ?
I'm looking at a holley brawler 850

The 750 will work fine. Run it for now to break in the cam and engine. If your performance feel falls short, then perhaps the larger carb will fit the bill. The 850 will provide more top end and most probably a better throttle feel as you press on the go pedal.
If you have a vacuum gauge, run it and see where it goes when your at wide open throttle. 1.5 or less is the target. If it is above 1.5, you do indeed need a bigger carb. The differences will probably be small but noticeable.
 
Unless you'll see track time, the 750 is fine. Especially since you already have it. You can jet it to meet your performance goals.
 
Ok I kinda thought the 750 would be fine . It is just a eld .
If someone traded a holley double pumper would that help any I like elds better but gotta do what's needed to help my car go vroom
 
I would sure try the edelbrock 750, before investing in something else. There have been rumors I have seen, the 750 edelbrocks are harder to tune than the other sizes.
I, too, like the brawlers, I am looking at an 850 race version for my bracket car.
 
Use what you have. you never know what will come down the road. You dont even need a carb yet...get the engine built. baby steps
 
I like to have everything in front of me when I do something . I don't want to build an eng and be missing a part here or there . I like doing it and getting it done in one sitting . If I don't I forget stuff!
But I'll probably run the 750 I have unless someone offers to buy it I got a friend looking for a carb this one is a bit big but it will work.
I've ran 750cfm on everything even 318's never had issues they always tuned easily for me (back when I was younger it was $150 cheaper to buy a 750 instead of a 600 or 650) could never figure out why but I bought what I could afford and never gave a problem so I never changed things .
I had that 72 440 4 speed charger and it had a 750 on it ran good but always seemed hungry !
Guy that bought it from me put a 1080 demon on it and that thing was a monster !

I'm by no means building a race car but I'm not gonna get my *** handed to me by no mustang or Camaro ether !!!!

Way I see it I build it right the first time I won't need to screw with it later !!!!
Still on fence about the Dana I've heard of many 8 3/4 being dragged in the 9's-10's and holding together fine !
Guess we will see how my funds fall if I can afford a big rear or not !

Just run the Edelbrock 750. The Holley 750 still flows the same amount of air and fuel. The Holley advantage is parts for super tuning the carb. Which most people don’t do or really need. A simple 3310 model would be great up top as well but not really more tunable than the Edelbrock.
 
I have read that Holley double pumpers are good on dedicated race cars, but not great on street cars. I have Edelbrock 750 cfm. on both my 440's. Spend the extra $$ for the automatic choke kit.

I’m not exactly a “Holley Fan” per say, but I’ll call BS on that one really fast having been there done that & would easily call it good and do it again with out a second thought.

I've heard Holley's great for track but don't stay adjusted during street use. Eld not as good on track but set and forget on street cars

But after you have a good long think 90%of cars at shows have Holley's on them. So someone lied somewhere I think . I've had one Holley it was a snappy little thing . But mostly run eld 750 on everything .....
 
Its all what you like. I run holleys. I dont love carter/Edelbrock's but my 64 has an OE AFB on it. it works fine. My challenger has a vacuum holley on it. love the holleys always have always will. They work best when all the blades are vertical....

I find Holley’s dominate but when you start to talk tech to the car owner, they don’t know Jack about the carb much less what jets they have in the carb. I’m doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out most of these people purchase the Holley because there told to and obey like a good robot.

I had one guy tell me his manual choke carb made more 20 more HP than an electric choke carb (same carb, only the chokes were different) because the description under the picture told him so.

This could go on forever, lol. Holleys are more tunable for on the track usage. But, they don’t like specks of dirt. I still like vac.secondaries on the street, no matter the trans-better fuel mileage. I love both styles of carbs.
 
^^^^^^^^ Yeah, I had a guy tell me that my Edelbrock is no good because it is a emissions carb.
I asked "What makes it a emission carb ? His reply "It has a electric choke and a canister fitting for the bowl vent.
Plus they are different internal." "Really how so ?" " I just know they are."
