The old Ferrari killer died today...RIP

DALLAS — Legendary race driver and Shelby Cobra sports car designer Carroll Shelby has died at age 89.

Shelby's company Carroll Shelby International says Shelby died Thursday at a Dallas hospital. He had received a heart transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 1996.

The one-time chicken farmer had more than a half-dozen successful careers during his long life including car manufacturer and African safari tour operator.

Shelby first gained fame in the automotive world by winning France's grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race with a teammate in 1959.

He then combined a Ford V-8 engine with a British sport car chassis to make the Cobra, which debuted in 1962.

Shelby also later worked on Chrysler's high-powered Viper sports car.

R.I.P. Carroll Shelby, One of the best car guys this world has ever seen.

And I just read his biography this year... What a character, defineately what the car industry needed.

Rest In Peace...

Rest In Peace Carroll Shelby, God Speed, you will be dearly missed in all of the car community... My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends & employees, my best wishes to all concerned... Wow that really sucks, but I'm not really completely surprised, because of his health issues, multiple transplants, etc... 89 is a great long life, he did so much for car culture in general... R.I.P.

Oh man. That's very sad. RIP Carroll Shelby. The automotive world wouldn't be the same without you.

He was pretty amazing. He stuck it to Ferrari and built some iconic cars.

This thread wouldn't be complete without a picture of one of the most awesome cars ever built...

There will never be another like Mr. Shelby. Just a bunch of wannabes that can draw & watch others do all the work. I have NO doubt in my mind that in his younger days he could do any & all the work himself from bumper to bumper.Iv watched plenty of interviews over the years with him & he always seemed like just one of the guys. And just look at all the innovations he made. Not only just to Ford, but innovations to Ford that made GM & Chrysler up their game themselves to compete with them.Even though most of his time was spent with Ford,we all owe Mr. Shelby our graditude & thanks. People like Chip Foose couldnt hold his lug nuts.

I just found out, we really are losing the legends:sad7: now shelby has joint the greats. RIP

Sad day....

One of the greatest car guys ever. Even people who aren't into cars knew who Shelby was. RIP
